I really love art and music. They are both my passion. I am currently taking art courses such as Drawing and Painting 2 and going to another school for half a day for Commerical Art. I just need to know what do I need to get into an art college?
Where are the best art colleges?
Do some art colleges offer a music program?
Will going to an art college give me an advantage over people going to a regular college taking art courses?
Will it be more expensive to go to an art college vs. a regular university?
As, you can see I have a lot of questions. I just don't wanna waste my parents money but my Dad and some strangers say that I am good at art and I need to continue it.
What do I need to get into an art college and what do they offer?
If you want to continue with both art and music, you should look at a university and not an art school. People have a romantic idea about going to art school, but there is much to be said for not only developing your art skills but also becoming well educated in a broader sense. A university expects this.
Art and music are both demanding majors, but it is possible to pursue both. Or you could major in art and participate in some music experiences too. You could take courses such as music history, basic music theory, and you could participate in band or choral groups. Most good schools will have a range of music groups and some require being a major, some require auditions, and others are generally open to anyone who is interested. You might even be able to continue with lessons in voice or your instrument.
SUNY Fredonia has a strong reputation in both art and music and students are able to be involved in both areas if they chose. Many other schools would allow that too.
You also need to start thinking about what area of art suits you best. A comprehensive university will expect you to have a range of art coursework, but your studios will concentrate in your specific area and each one is quite different. Graphic Design compared to Sculpture, or Painting compared to Photography. . . . it is good to start thinking about what you want to get from an art degree and what you'd want to do after you graduated.
Good luck.
Reply:Graphic Design is a strong art major at Fredonia. The students all take photography at part of their major. Check it out.
Then you could take courses such as History of Jazz and History of World Music and lots of other music choices too.
Good luck in making decisions! Report It
Reply:You need a decent record as a high school student just to prove that you're basically smart and hard working.
You need a portfolio in your medium.
For a school that deals with both art and music, you might need to check into each one individually or maybe consider a comprehensive university. You'll get the "advantage" back by excelling relative to your peers.
