Art and Career in Art?
If your art is really good....it will get the attention of people who 'matter' if you can get it out there.
I started selling my watercolors when I was 15 at the local artist co-op. over the next 5 years I developed a small following. as they told their friends the paintings gathered more reputation. Then I started getting calls from people in other cities by people who Had seen my work at homes of people they were having dinner with etc.
I have never been in a commercial gallery but I show at non profit galleries co-ops and upper end restaurants.
I work in oils now and have developed a 'fan' base in that medium as well.
Try to get involved in the local arts scene. Ask your high school teacher where to start...then create art!!! Do it for the LOVE of it....it will be contagious.
I knew I wanted to be an artist when I was 4.....then as I said started selling work as a teen. I put it on the back burner for my late teen years....then traveled all over north America for 4 years an traded art for rent, etc.
There are so many ways to get your work out there. If you do pursue it...just remember you are the artist...that means you don't have to look at it from the 'gallery' owners point of view, and can in time come up with revolutionary ideas to get it out there on your own....yes! independent!
I am 31 now...I am starting to sell my oils for almost $3 a square inch....I have a major project on the go right now that will be a national show......
It didn't happen overnight....it is far from over....and I know all you have to do is think it...you'll get there somehow.
passions are like that !
don't let anyone get you down.
Reply:Art is a great job, as you'll be doing something you love, but it's not a great career choice usually, because it generally pays so low.
The problem is, is that lots of people enjoy painting and drawing, and when lots of people love doing something the market-place becomes saturated and wages become lower.
I would recommend getting into digital art, as it's still fairly new and it is much easier to find work doing this. So you could become an expert in 2D or 3D, or animaton work.
You're not going to make millions from this, but you can make a good living from it if you are good.
To be an actual painter, oil on canvas, you need to be something special... and then you also need to know all the right people.
The secret is to be different. Do something that no-one else has thought of, and you'll be a sure-fire hit.
Damien Hirst just sold more than $250 million worth of his "art" this month, so if you make it big, like anything, the rewards can be amazing.
Reply:if you have to ask, forget it. being an artist is very difficult if you're not amazing by now. be advised, you'll be sorry to pursue a career as an artist if you're not one from the beginning
Reply:Well, me_yes_me5, let me tell you 15 is not too early an age to be thinking about art as a career (I started painting at 14) but don't believe the myths about artists. It doesn't improve your talent to starve. If you are going into serious painting be sure you have a well-rounded education so there is something to fall back on. Even if you are very good (and that may take years) it is a difficult field in which to support yourself financially so be very rich going in or have a rich patron willing to buy all your work. As for promoting yourself; get into as many juried shows as you can enter and join ArtWanted to have your work available for folks to see.
