Is Art an end in itself, or a means to inspire us to action?

Should we persue to create art, in whatever form we desire--paintings, music, dancing--or should art be used as a vehicle to inspire the masses to work for a higher cause?

It seems to me art is stale when it an end unto itself, but a breath of fresh air when it is used as a tool for inspiration or worship. Were we created to live in a society where art is locked away in a museum, or books written and coded, only to be understood in depth by those holding college degrees? Are things like immaculate interior designs and model homes the end to which we live to achieve? And what in the world is the purpose of "high fashion"?? Please explain THAT to me...

Is Art an end in itself, or a means to inspire us to action?
Art is the visual expression of the soul. I feel it's primary purpose is an outlet of those emotions that cannot be described in words or put into actions. Art is the celebration of life, a mourning in death and an expression of the wonders we cannot fully comprehend.

If our desire as an artist is to inspire, then that is why we create. The viewers choice is still to reap from what we see and allow the creation to speak to us. To each of us, art is something different; our own private language that only we understand.
