What art major/career should I choose?

I'm in my freshman year of college with a major in art. Next fall I have to choose a concentration ( Fine Art or Graphic Communications). I've always loved to draw both on the computer and with traditional media ever since i was a little kid, and my favorite past time is to create elaborate stories for my characters. My professors say im talented with drawing, etc., so I'm leaning somewhat towards fine arts.

At the same time, my family is saying that I need to go into graph comm if i ever want to make any steady money. I love computers, but i've heard that it gets really monotonous after a while, and I don't want to end up hating my job (or being dirt poor, with all these student loans). Any help?

What art major/career should I choose?
Personally, I'd take the graphic communications route BUT also take some Fine Arts classes on the side, then I'd have a fine arts background to fall back on as well as a career and training in the graphic arts.

But it really all depends on you and what you think would be the best for your future career. It sounds like you are really interested in the Fine Arts but your parents want you to be successful, so they think Graphic Arts would be better. You could do some research and tell them how wide the Fine Arts market can be and that you always won't be a "starving" artist. (I had to do the same with mine when I told them I was persuing Illustration)
Reply:There's more career opportunities with a graphic arts degree, but you will still take drawing and painting for electives unless your program is unusual. The technical skills are always something good to have and if you can add photography and related programs to your resume, it's all the better. Film making is also good to have on your resume.
