Double major of Art and Psychology?

I am a Visual Art student (painting, drawing, sculpting, etc.) at an art based high school. I am only a sophomore. I am very interested in majoring in Psychology in college (my dream school is Brown University). However, my family cannot afford 40 grand a year. I know there is financial aid however is it possible to get a scholarship for visual art and double major? So that way I can do both, art and psychology?

Double major of Art and Psychology?
Yes. If you do receive a scholarship to Brown or any other school, and you should decide to add an extra major, in most cases you should be able to do so at no extra cost. So it is very possible!

"The Definition of ART"

by Mark A Gallegos, B. F. A.

“Art” is a declaration of recognition, it applies to all "things" that are sustained within the boundaries of a conducive environment, it is achieved through constructive and destructive means and realized along perceptual planes; in essence, it is something, anything and everything, however, it is nothing until it is realized through the conscious effort of humans. -- “Art” is a manifestation of our Human Perceptuality and serves as a measure of our Humanity, yet it is “nothing” until we show it, speak it and make a part of our lives.

It is interesting to watch while people try to use Art to separate Art from Art...

Science, like any other specialized perspective is only a "perspective", Art is the means through which we are able to give Science (or any "thing" for that matter) its significance. what you are describing is the difference between "Intuitive-Conscious Effort" and the "Documentative Effort" of a machine (which is an animated "thing" and incapable of art) processing the "Measured Conscious Effort" a living being (the animator, a human).

The "Potential for Art" is in all of us (humans), It is governed by our "Perceptuality" and interprated as a "Perception" it is achieved when our "Point of View" is perceived by others and preserved for its significance towards Humanity.

Which art college is a better opportunity for education and jobs in the illustration field?

NY-Parsons the New School of Design-34,000 a year

CA-Laguna College of Art and Design- 20,600 a year

GA-Savannah College of Art and Design- 26,000 a year

I am right now undecided on which college to go to. My concern is which college is going to best suite me 4 years from now and look good on a resume. Is it worth paying more for school to go to the "harvard' of art schools(Parsons) in hope of making a higher salary or is it a better deal going to one of the cheaper options?

Try Cooper Union in NYC I think you will find that once you have a degree where it came from loses some value, it is what you produce that matters.

What do you think of...art?

yeah. The questions been asked before. So what. I'm lacking any other ides here.

So what do you think of art? Just your opinion. Whether you love it or hate it or don't understand it. Find it beautiful, or expressive Or ridiculous and strange.

What I think: I love art. I guess I could describe the reason why with the fact that it's the one thing in the universe that is truly never one and the same with anything else... or that It's non-conformity in the truest form it's actually possible for it to be in. Or maybe... that there is no "norm" no normal because every artist, every piece of art be it painting or sculpture, or photo has their own style, their own individual unique imaginations and creativity... But even with all that said it's hard for me to actually explain... The best way I can sum up what I think of art is that I guess... Art to me is indefinable... and that's in truth what makes it beautiful. =/

ok I'm done being a freak. you can answer the question now.

I love art. Truly great art will make you feel a whole range of emotions. Even when art makes me angry, I still have to admit that it is great because it served it's purpose and made me think or feel something.
Reply:An art can be a variety of things, not just a painting, photo, etc. My favorite art, however, is instrumental music. How you can express any emotion through it.
Reply:Im an artist! So....I LOVE ART I think it is one of the greatest forms of expression and most the time when an artist creating he/she HAS A MESSAGE or a certain way they want you to FEEL when you look at something they've created.....Art is amazeing.
Reply:I love that it's subjective. There really is no good or bad art, unless it's mass produced Walmart art, or you are a total snob. I love that it inspires moves and motivates, but it can sadden anger and burn.
Reply:I'm not really big into the visual arts, but the word art encompasses many things. I love sculptures when I'm at an art show. Museums wont let you feel things; they don't tend to be very handicap accessible. I also rather enjoy the audible arts.

How about computer art?

Do you think that, as an art form, the digital masterpieces being created entirely within computer systems are as valid as those created by more traditional real-world techniques?

I ask because a lot of people I have spoken to in the real world seem to think that computerised art is not "real" art and react to it with some measure of disdain. But to my mind these modern artists are every bit as skilled as real world artists, they just use different media to get the job done.

Then I take a look at some so-called art in the real world and despair; piles of old tyres and stacked bricks, dissected horses and squalid, unmade beds just don't float my boat the way some of those fractals, 3D images and airbrushed miracles do.

I'd give my eye teeth to have just a little bit of the skill some of these computer artists have.

UCLA Art Portfolio Question?

I'm working on my portfolio to get into the digital arts/media arts program at UCLA and they request 5 pieces of work.

I was wondering what they were looking for as in, what programs they like used best and what they like seen done in art.

Thanks for all the help in building my portfolio, making it better, and increasing the chances of allowing me to attend UCLA!

UCLA Art Portfolio Question?
Did you take any graphic design or media classes in school? If so, include 2 of those works. If you have never taken a class like that, but took web design, perhaps include a website or two that you can show case.

You should also show off your drawing and general art talent. Its tough to tell you want to put in w/out seeing your work samples, and in understanding what types of art you like to do: painting, drawing, photography, printmaking...etc.

The art of living....?

what according to you, is the "art of living"...

NOTE- I am not talking here abt the society "the art of living" founded by Shri Shri Ravi Shankar Ji....I am talking abt the phrase as a whole....

what is the art of living according to u ? which u have learnt frm urs or other's experiences and maybe some theories too ?

thank u very much for ur response and stars :)

The art of living....?
Dear Madhavi,

We have taken several births to become humans. Every time we improved and enhanced our knowledge and wisdom, hence we were promoted. Being born as humans in itself is a great reward as we can think and have intelligence.

Before we learnt the art of living, we need to understand why we are born and where we are heading towards.

Actually all are progressing to reach god. We can lead a normal life and keep taking several births. In each birth you will have ups and downs. You will have material gains. Learn the same thing again and again still remain the same.

Imagine you studying in the same class for 5 years, don’t you think it is so boring. You need to pass and move to the next class.

Life is an examination every day you have question to your life. At the end of your life, your answer paper is evaluated accordingly you are given next birth.

Finally when you keep taking birth you progress to become more and more good, finally take the spiritual path to reach the god.

Why should we reach god, why not enjoy human life. We get happiness in this world too however it is short lived.

Whenever we get happiness it is followed by sadness. As we desire things in life which are perishable. You like furniture and buy it, and then it becomes old. You love the beauty of a person and that person looses their beauty.

You love your parents and one day they have to leave you. You love your children, one day you have to leave them.

We always rely our happiness on changing things due to which our happiness is short lived.

We need to desire the one which is changeless. The only thing in this world which doesn’t change is God. Your parents don’t come to your next birth but the same god is around.

Now what is that happiness (blizz) we are talking about? That blizz or ultimate happiness is shown to us in this life too. He has given a sample of that happiness in our lives. When someone reaches organism they get this ultimate pleasure / blizz / anadam / ultimate happiness for few seconds. We love it so much we want it again and again which leads to lust.

Imagine that pleasure / bliss / happiness with us forever. Hence god gives you two options, whether you want that few seconds’ happiness or happiness forever. If you want that small happiness then live with it.

However if you want to gain something big you need to sacrifice small things in life.

God wants you to be good hearted, smiling and follow Dharma. Apart from this he wants you to love him and keep thinking of him. Once you do that you are becoming more and closer to him.

As much closer and closer you become, you will start enjoying life. You will feel that he is protecting you in every way. He is doing everything great for you. Once you have a secured life because of his blessings you will have lead a peaceful life.

This is according to me is “art of living”

With love

Gentleman
Reply:Art as such is different and opposite to mathematical formulas, scientific theories, which are logically founded and understood. Whereas the Art is to be learnt by intutive understanding and it is a sort of Knack like Swmimming which keeps you floating or riding the Bicycle which keeps you from falling on ground.

Now the Art of Living is part of the Life as the name denotes. The day to day activities, interactions with family society and market/shop/boss/office colleagues etc will make one exchange and react the thoughts, verbal talks and emotions in the given situations. Normal person will get pleased, elated, when the comfortable talks, emotions, situations are there and when adverse talks, emotions, and situations are there gets disturbed. This is normal reaction of a normal person. But when the person who knows the Art of Living, gets into favourable or disturbing sitiuations, s/he reacts to the situation without loosing the track of her/his inner peace and balance, if the Art of Living is learnt Well.

Art of Living consists of being in touch with Self, Physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually at the same time.
Reply:Well first of all, the word "art" is used for the things which are difficult for majority. Its not that I'm saying most people don't "know" the art of living, many do, but the problem is to "implemen", to "follow" that pattern which is actually difficult but rewarding. One can give all the theories- "keys to happiness" -confidence, healthy life style, peace of mind, these are the things which can make a person to be "happy" which is the main purpose of the "art of living". So we know what to achieve, but the problem is how to achieve, unfortunately I'm not blessed with this "art" to answer this "how".......
Reply:It is a quite difficult question, as it seems to be simple.

Living is looking for happiness.

You can reach it by several ways, and for everyone there's a different meaning for the word "happiness". So, as it is very subjective, the way to reach it, absolutely depends on everyone.

Life is worth living if you think about the smile of a child (for someone)... or life is such when you find love, or when a real friend shows his friendship in some hard situations.

I think that the art of living is that of taking the best from everything we have to face each day.

Telefon Tel Aviv - Electronic band says that "Life Is All About Taking Things In And Putting Things Out"...

Just think about that!
Reply:The art of living is seizing each day and taking something from everything. Never taking for granted the blessings bestowed upon us. Giving and getting and being happy with each experience because you know that it will better you somehow. Knowing you are here for a reason and taking the time to search through and find out why. The art of living is never settling but always wanting something more, and trying to make it happen.
Reply:Dear Friend,

Really Living well is an Art.

Hate none and Love all. That is the foundation.

Next do not do things to others, that if done to you hurt you.

Do not interfere in personal matters of others.

Help what ever you can to the needy and destitute.

If you believe in God , pray to Him daily and you get energy to all this.

Doing drills is a routine matter to maintain our body. while living, what we have to the family, to the people, and how our behaviour weighed by others..high thinkings, name in the society.. this is art of living. Those who have no time for all these things go somewhere and learning .. how to live. and art of living. go to jungle.. see the deer .. which is surrounded by enemy animals, even otherwise, it lives, it grows , it yields calfs .. now say wherefrom it learnt the art of living..have you heard of any animal worried about tomorrow? it eats today and going without any worries about tomorrow.. wherefrom it learnt the art of living. we know fully well, but it is a reminder by someone to deliver a discourse.. if i give a discourse on art of living.. who will come except you. Observational Art tips?

I have an exam tomorrow in absorvational art (you know when you've gotta draw fruits/jugs/cloths in front set in front of you)! It's an entrance exam to my University's Art and Design Department. I'm so nervous! Any art tips?

Thanks!

Observational Art tips?
one thing i was taught that i wil always remember for observational studies, draw only what you see, objects do not have a black outline around them, beware of perspective, use guides if possible, and squint often to check your tonal values. you'll look strange in the process, but you'll make some magic in the end. GOOD LUCK!
Reply:Am I the only one thinking it's a bit late to learn to draw?
Reply:my best advice to you would be DONT GO TO ART SCHOOL! IT RAPES YOU OF YOUR NATURAL TALENT. i learnt how to draw/paint/sculpt based upon feeling bone structures shapes and textures
Reply:You can either do it very well, or you can't. No faking this one. No tips, just do the best you can and let the chips fall where they may.
Reply:Try to draw the negative spaces without focusing on the actual objects to closely. This will help you to draw the proportions and relative sizes more accurately. After you've sketched the basic shapes start working on the larger details. Keep your gummy eraser handy for refining the smaller details. Remember that everything you see is composed of shades of gray. There is no such thing as color...only tone.

What Art is considered "not art"?

What types of Art can you think of or know of that are not conventionally considered to be "Art"? Nothing that is found in Museums or anything like that....

What Art is considered "not art"?
What and How Art is determined is arrogant and elitist in my view.

Generally it seems to be trendies with an agenda who declare who the "Artiest dejour" is, and usually because they have a vested interest in selling the dross promulgated by this individual..

I have seen Art painted to look like a 3 year old threw up and declared masterpieces.

Somebody once said that I dont know art but I know what I like , to me that is what determines Art.
Reply:something distasteful. Like stick figures humping each other that someone drew just to be an idiot. Other than that if you make it with the intention to create then it is art, I believe. Actually maybe the stick figures are art. Anything is art, but you may not like it and therefore not consider it art in your own view.
Reply:all art is art, the world is a work of art because everything in it is twisted and questionable.

Private art schools in the states?

I am considering going to a private art college in the states and had a few questions.

Do they have international tuition fees?

Do they require a second language at a grade 12 level?

Do they require calculus?

Do they require SATs or any other tests?

I am Canadian, so I am pretty clueless about these things and am going on what I know about American universities, which isn't much anyways.

Seeing as they are really expensive, would it be smarter to do two years at a public art school here, then finish in the states?

Lastly, I was looking at the Art Center and Otis, but I know there are a lot of other good schools, so if anyone has a list of some others, that would be great. I don't want to leave the west coast...

Private art schools in the states?
Most private art schools charge the same tuition for every student (whether resident, non-resident, or international). Because you're coming from Canada, you might not need to take the TOEFL because Canada is a English speaking nation (however, contact the schools just in case). They don't require calculus, however, most do require SAT/ACT scores.

You could approach going first to a public school there, might even want to consider a community college if it's offered there. That could definitely save you money. Some others you can consider on the west coast:

Cal Arts

Laguna College of Art and Design

San Fransico Art Institute

Academy of Art University

California College of the Arts

These are all in California, however, there are other colleges in Oregon and Washington. You should also look into the public colleges and universities on the west coast that offer an art program. Some public schools have really good art departments; might even save you money or would cost just as much as an art school transferring to a public school. Some schools to consider in California:

UCLA

California State University, Long Beach

Hope this information helps. Good luck to you.

Reply:Okay. i do believe they do require english testing have you heard of TOEFL? It is required in most schools. Each school has a different score which you would need to pass. Mostly all of them do not require calculus and I do believe they all require a SAT or ACT. Art school is great but it is VERY expensive. Not only are you paying a more pricey international tutition, but the money you spend for materials is CRAZY. It may depend on your major but 95% of the majors do same core classes anyway for the first two years so you won't be missing out much if you do decide to go public, which in my opinion is very wise. Just make sure the classes which you take at the public school get transfered. Trust me, it took me two years in a private art school in New York to realize that all I was doing was wasting money for my undergrad education. Sure the experiences is important but really, since most people go to grad school anyway, completing your undergraduate in a public school is a very wise choice. Later when you really decide on a specific major, then I suggest then doing to a private art school for graduate or even for the two years.

Wherefore Art Thou (please tell me what you think. Thanks!)?

Wherefore Art Thou

Wherefore art thou my love rest?

To thee I pray for the best.

Thou might suffer great deal to thee

But then I know he's loving me...

Till' winter solstice ever end,

be morrow nor night can only mend.

A true lover's heartache

through a summer kiss may break.

Sleep the dawn of darkness away

May moonlight shine to thee astray

and to this I bid adieu!

A sin that broke your heart so true.

Last kiss and then I shall part

To you, my love, with my very heart

And as I pray for the best,

"Wherefore art thou my love rest?"...

Excellent. Amasing. Beautiful. Talented! Yes, this is a great writ, indeed. This is still such a lovely poem. Please do guard your work very closely, I'd be heartbroken were someone to rip you off someday. You should look into having this poem (and I assume more great ones) published, and fast.

I am so happy to see someone who not only incorporates rhyme and rhythm, but also an old-fashioned prose! Beautiful!

Keep writing, absolutely!! Many poets your age and even up can't hold a candle to you.

Reply:I too am an artist and the only results you can factor is - Is your art selling? Regardless of what you think of your own work - it is the thoughts of others that really matters.

Do the people in your area buy landscapes, still-lifes, portraits... focus on what the people want and they you will have "good" art.
Reply:beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I guess there is not really any "bad" art...
Reply:Good for what??? Bad for whom???? Art is not a commodity like salt or sugar. It has no set taste or content. Art is someones bare soul hanging on the wall. If it moans..if it sings...if it screams at us to listen in stark lines and jarring colors we need to be open and understand its message. Produce art as if you were giving birth...as if you were cooking dinner for your lover....as if you were involved in a deep conversation and the line and the color were your only words. Give your eyes and hands and your emotions to your work and I can guarantee you will not ask this question ever again.
Reply:if enough ppl like it, it's aesthetically pleasing and therefore, should be considered good.

or if it has a profound message.
Reply:The short answer is that you can't know because it's all subjective.

However, you should have some sense of whether or not you think your painting look "good" or not, whatever "good" might mean to you.

And if your style is supposed to be technical realism, then you can tell if its good based on how technically realistic they look. Thats kind of obvious.

Also, another obvious answer to your question is to show your art to as many differant people as you can and see what they think.
Reply:Art isn't rated as good and bad. That's just too narrow a window to ask for a judgment. Put 50 people in a room, and you'll get fifty opinions.

What makes good art is when whatever people say about your work makes them feel interesting or alive. It forces a response. If you place a good piece of art in a museum, and people talk about how horrible it was and how they hated it. And next week, they're still talking about it, that's a success! Maybe that art made them feel smug and superior and every time they thought about your art, it sustained and reinvigorated their superior attitude.

Read art critics and see what criteria they use to judge art. If your entire vocabulary of art criticism is "Good and Bad," then throw away your cave-man dictionary. If the art you're looking at only inspires you to say, "it's good." Then it's not good. Get it?

Here's a middle/high school class outline and notes on critical art language:

http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/letsnet...
Reply:All art is good. Live your passion. Life is long, buy my art - should be your motto. Good luck, good art.
Reply:There is no "bad" art. It is the perception of the artist and the acceptance of such in the current or former medium. For instance, the art of Picasso or Georgio DeChrico was not famous during their times. While Picasso enjoyed a proliferation of his works during his time, DeChrico (circa 1969) did not.

While Picasso, works by Chagall, Matisse, Van Gogh and Dali were not recognized during their times, they are now renowned in the art world.

As a collector and as one of appreciation, there are works that really do not make any sense. However, impressionists were the forerunner of that medium and though they were not appreciated at the time, have found exception in commanding extraordinary prices in the art forum.

How do you know if you are producing good art? You already have...

Pricing art for art fairs?

I'll be involved in an art fair soon and I want some suggestions on how to price my "art"! I do graphics/digital type work! My market is in FLORIDA %26amp; and if you know any good research sites I could look at that would be perfect too!

Thanks all you smart gods %26amp; godesses!

Pricing art for art fairs?
Generally when pricing art you look at three things: how much the materials cost, how long it took you to make the piece of art, and how much people would be willing to pay for it. Since your art is digital, your materials would be the quality paper you print it on, the matting you put around it, and whatever else you do to it to get it ready to sell. You want to make sure to price your piece higher than the cost of materials. The next factor you need to look at is how much time you spent making each piece. Obviously you wouldn't charge as much for a piece that took you an hour as you would one that took you a week. You also have to think about how much your time is really worth. And last but not least, you need to find out how much people are willing to pay for your art. The best way to find this out is to ask around. Ask your friends, family, and neighbors how much they would pay for one of your pieces. Sometimes this can surprise you. If it is more than what you had it priced at, you might consider raising the price. And if it is less, I would definitely lower your prices. Good luck with your art fair, I hope everything works out for you!
Reply:Put as much as you can get away with. You can always scopew out the competition and lower or rise your prices to coincide.

Why should learning 3d (computer) art in high school be important for students?

my principal is planning on adding a 3d computer arts program to the art dept, which is great. he is asking me to teach it until they can find someone to fill that position. only problem is, my knowledge of computer art is very limited. i had worked with photoshop and 3dmax back when i was in college, but it wasn't very indepth. the principal says that he has a "vision" for the program and wants to know mine as well. i really don't have much of a vision at all for the program, to me the computer is just another tool to make art. help me out people. i need a vision. someone help me see the light of art and technology.

Why should learning 3d (computer) art in high school be important for students?
Learning 3D computer art in school should be important for students in high school for the following reason:

1. Allows them another tool to create works of art.

2. Working in three dimensions allows the student to use another aspect of their brain. We tend to draw in one and two dimensions but three dimensions brings forth more abilities and skills for the students to harness.

3. (Cutting edge) Technology allows the students to get first hand experience on the computer software and the hardware.

4. Students can learn skills like planning and implementing small scale projects. Through the use of 3D software, students will plan, create, and animate a 1 minute animation.

5. Team work is involved as students will team up in pairs or groups of (pick a number).

6. Students iwll have a portfolio of their work when they are finished.

If you begin 3d at grade 10 they can begin to get introduced to the programs. By grade 11 they are creating items in photoshop, premiere, etc and by grade 12 they are making an animated video (by the end of the year).

Hope this helps. It sounds like a great opportunity for you to enhance your skills as well.

I've seen some schools that build their own websites (the students do a page) and put their 3d artwork on it.
Reply:I have worked in the 3D movie and scientific industry for some time and can tell you. Companies such as Pfizer, BMW, NASA and others....use 3D imaging/graphics to

project or display in 3D to give the designer or viewer a better representation of the objects being viewed.

CGI movies as well as live action movies will also play a key role in the immediate future in the entertainment industry.

Mechanical design also uses 3D imaging....as does molecular design for chemists and pharmaceuticals.

Also look into blue ray and maya
Reply:Because someone in that class may want to create video games when they grow up or make new things that will make them rich later on in life. The 3D can be used in moviesand cartoons too and that what some people get credited maybe even rewarded for. But first you got to know how to use it. Plus it opens up your artistic side and some students may love art. Your parents would be proud to see what you can do. Hope this links help. Good luck and rooting for ya.

GCSE ART HELP! Which artist should inspire me?

I really need help. If you look through my past questions you can see that i already had trouble with my gcse art but now im really stuck! I have chosen a theme - Vanity. Now my art teacher wants us to chose an artist who did the same kind of work we have done and she wants that artist to inspire us!! Who am i meant to do?? I have to have a full A3 page filled with information about the artist by next week. I HAVE to start it tomorrow! I went up to see my teacher and she suggested i do orlan (www.orlan.net) who did plastic surgery on her self and called it "art". But it doesnt inspire me as much. How can i do a project on something that im not interessted in? If i dont find an artist i just have to stick with orlan and follow the crowd... i hope anyone can help

GCSE ART HELP! Which artist should inspire me?
stop panic-inc and stressing out over nothing. in the time it took to type the questionand blather on about past questions (it is totallysilly to expect us to look at your previous questions!) you could have looked in a book or on a site about art and gotten on with it yourself. don't bother with what others are doing. What you are interested in is the problem. You have not said what kind of work you have already done, but you are supposed to use that as a starting point to find out what artist inspired you, if I understand your rather garbled message... Now, get yourself together, in a quiet place, alone, get rid of the phone, computer, ipod and friends. look at your own art and decide who or what inspired it. Is what you have already done in line with Vanity, your new chosen subject?

If not, then either change your theme to match your work, or start over.

try Gustave Klimt if you are looking at VAnity - the women he painted have vanity... get out of here and get to work. You can do it!!!

Okay, i need to remember a particular art gallery in Munich. I don't remember the name so here are things i remember about it -

The outside of the gallery had a big garden with a fountain.

Art inside included modern and old art.

There was a wall with glass bottles sticking out of it.

There was a video about iraq.

A very notable piece of artwork of a dark-haired lady in red, with a very pointy face.

umm and i think it was pretty much in the heart of munich, but i am not too sure.

What art and crafts can i do with 2-5 year old girls?????

hi. in a week im going round my mums friends house to do arts and crafts with her kid and some kids she looks after (all girls) and iv said ill do arts and crafts with them as she has loads of arty bits. so i was wondering what sort of stuff i could do. thay want to do somthing with butterflys and clonwes. + if you know of any good art websites with insrutions on or sone idears it would be help-full

What art and crafts can i do with 2-5 year old girls?????
Make play dough, finger painting is always good, also get them involved in making snacks and or lunch. Try kraftfoods for kids meals.
Reply:Arts and crafts activities are great for little kids. Usually you don't have to plan anything for these activities. Just give the girls papers, crayons or finger paints, stickers etc, and they will know what to do!

However, if you want to make something else and you need instruction you can find a lot of ideas at http://www.activities-for-kids.net/Arts-...

Have fun!
Reply:The foamy stick and peal pictures are fun for both of those ages and you can find them on butterfly's and clowns at walmart or the dollar store.

I also like large shoelaces and died dry macaroni (use food coloring) then string into necklaces. Don't forget to use colored strips of paper to make paper chains.

Crayola crayons has a website that has kids activities and a kids club. they make paints and markers that only mark on the special paper and not on anything else which is great for clean up.

Look at the web site www.smartflix.com They rent dvds on how do subject from art projects to fixing your car. Its the best source of "How To " information available on lots of interesting things for about $10 including postage.

Check out the home schooling web sites as they sell tons of activity books on things for small childrens art projects.
Reply:Hello - my 2 girls ( now 3 1/2 and 5) have ALWAYS loved arst and crafts. i can give you a few suggestions.

one thing that is real easy is, get some construction paper. Then , they sell these things like those bingo markers , but they are made for painting (for kids). they are awsome.

arts %26amp; craft stores also usually sell these foam sheets , and shapes , and then you can buy in these plastic buckets, foam letters, shapes, animals, flowers....and the BEST part is, the foam pieces, the back peels off , and they stick. No glue, no tape. WONDERFUL. they also stick on paper.

you can also buy foam craft kits . i actually just got , from walmart , kits to make valentine mailboxes. only a couple dollars. Walmart is good for inexpensive crayons, crafts, paper, coloring books, etc....

good luck to you !!
Reply:I say valentine's is around the corner. easter and Mother's day too! I would make stuff for those holidays. On the computer I would just type in kids crafts and see what you get.

Are art critics a western construct?

Do other cultures have art critics? do they critize western art too? Is art a universal thing?

Are art critics a western construct?
This is a great question, but a really difficult one to answer. There have always been critics of various kinds, but it's only in the early 19th century in Europe that the field of art history becomes embodied as an academic discipline.

Since the word 'art' applies to so many types of objects and texts, it would be impossible to give an account for each. Certainly there have been writers who critique written work and dramatic performances for a long time. And there have been biographies of visual artists at least since the Renaissance (probably the best-known work of this kind is "Lives of the Artists," where Giorgio Vasari gives not only an account of the facts about the subjects but also describes - and critiques - examples of their respective works).

As Western art evolved from the purely religious to a combination of the religious and the secular, there were always de facto art critics; namely, the people who bought, sold, commissioned, and collected work. Curatorship is an important part of the art historical world, and the people with the means and the interest certainly play a huge role in what does and does not get produced. And this quiet but effective criticism is at work in any culture where the purpose of art has moved away from serving only as a point of reference for devotion to the supernatural and has taken on a more fluid aesthetic purpose.

That's pretty dense stuff; let me see if I can give you an example. If I'm carving a statue of Jesus for a church, there are two ways in which I might be critiqued: on the one hand, if you're a Christian, you could critique me for not using suitable materials, or for somehow straying from accepted boundaries of what a religious statue should look like, about whether or not the sculpture falls within canonically accepted doctrines and tastes. That's all within the context of a believer who has preconceived notions about what should and shouldn't be represented. This is a valid form of criticism that informs the way art gets made.

The other kind of criticism would seek not to argue simply that a work does or does not fulfill its stated purpose (helping people pray, for instance), but to show the ways in which it expresses all kinds of formal and historical (and sometimes psychological) possibilities that intersect in the work itself. This kind of criticism tries to gain a broader understanding of a work of art by putting it into a larger context. It doesn't always succeed. Any critic will find it impossible to escape the latent assumptions of his or her time and place, the preoccupations of politics and the taint of prejudice, not to mention the limits of personal knowledge, to give a complete account of the work of art in question. That's why there are always new things to say about old works. As our perspective changes, and as new art comes into the world, the old ways of seeing become inadequate.

That being said, I think that much of what we call criticism today comes out of a 19th-century urge to turn every discipline into a science. This is a Western phenomenon, but I'm not sure that there is really anywhere that has a written culture that hasn't taken up some version of art criticism in the last 100 years.

I'd like to recommend an essay to you, "Tradition and the Individual Talent" by T.S. Eliot. In it he describes a theory about the relationship of art and artists to the past. I think it touches on some of the questions you have. It's also a very fine example of general literary criticism which applies equally well to the visual arts.
Reply:Critics are a western construct. In the east they are called "infidel" or "jew" and killed.

An Art question...for those serious in the Arts......?

I volunteer at my daughter's school for an Art Program. Since there is no Art teacher on staff, parents can come in to teach a class about a certain artist and print and then the kids do a sample of the style or the artwork. I did this last year and had no problems, now for my next assignmetn, I'm stumped. I have to explain surrealism style of painting and my example is "snap the whip" by Winslow Homer. Any tips on how to explain what the surrealism style is.....when I'm not sure how to explain it? I'm teaching 5th graders....anyone able to help?

An Art question...for those serious in the Arts......?
There are also lots of resources on the web that could give you some material and ideas. Most of the art museums and colleges have education sites. If an art museum is having a major exhibition there is often a section with study activities for kids, so if there is/was a surrealist one that could help.

There’s some resources here, I found that not all the links work, but good luck!

Also an outline definition here:

http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/glo/surr...

This looks as though it might be helpful too:

http://library.thinkquest.org/J001159/ar...

There’s some interesting notes about ‘Snap the Whip’ here:

http://www.butlerart.com/pc_book/pages/w...

I suspect though that if you want to use this painting as your example ‘surrealism’ isn’t the right category, as indicated by your other answers it doesn’t fit in with what is usually understood by surrealism.

Winslow Homer's work is usually defined as 'symbolic realism', so wondering if some confusion might have crept in here. But if this is what you have to do it seems a lot more straightforward, you could get the pupils to depict their school, any traditional games they still play etc., and then look at the symbolism.
Reply:For fifth graders... you might try something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Book-Surrealist-Ga...

Ditch Winslow Homer and go with Ernst or Dali ...maybe Magritte or Man-Ray... Tanguy, Duchamp, etc...

You might read "Surrealism and Painting" { http://www.amazon.com/Andr%C3%A9-Breton-... } and, at least, a few of the manifestos before you start trying to teach people about the movement.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrealism {Breton... bottom of page}
Reply:Surrealism is the style which incorporates a real theme and turns it into a completely fantasized rendering. Frank frazetta is a good example of this style.

surrealizm takes a subject and twists the basic premise until it is no longer just one simple Idea or even to the point that it takes the subject and distorts it and yet the items in the artwork are still recognizable. try looking inot surrealistic paintedrs like "Dali, Frazetta, Renoir, Matise and a few others. the term "surreral" still has to fall outside of the description parameters of other forms of artwork such as "impressionism" and therin lies the rub. I dont think you can define"surreal" and be exact.
Reply:I think the link AnnOnnyM gave you is good for Homer, however I think if you are using Homer the term you are looking for is "Social Realism" not Surrealism. Social Realism deals with real life working class people and Homer's subjects might easily be compared to characters in Mark Twain's books (i.e. Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn...).
Reply:I think it will be easier to explain Surrealism with a Salvadore Dali print where one cansee the manipulation of time and it is great imaginary artwork...Even though during the period He painted as a surrealist Mr Dali was not liked by the French and other Surrealists...He made so much money by coming to the US for his shows. and Mr Dali was political during the Spanish civil war (1930's) He died in the 1980's after living for decades in spain in a castle...look up his art because he is considered the darling of American surrealism...You can really get more than just art but how art and politics have influenced each other in a way that ten year olds can relate with creativity too...I taught k-8 art for awhile and you have a good idea...

Writing Article: What Art Supplies Would Make Good Gifts for Non-Artists?

I need to compose a little write-up about what art supplies would make good gifts to children and especially young adults who are not into art. The idea is that a given set of supplies, hopefully in a single preassembled and affordable set, would inspire young folks to experiment with drawing/painting/carving/etc.

My instinct tells me that art is best learned without any fancy supplies at first, but this is an assignment that I don't have the option of declining.

If anyone has any suggestions or can even point me to particular products, I would be immensely grateful. It would really help me find a way to bring order to this chaotic topic. Perhaps a focus on areas of art other than drawing and painting, such as carving of some sort, would provide an opportunity to focus on some supplies that would actually be necessary for a beginner rather than simply superfluous.

Thank you!

Writing Article: What Art Supplies Would Make Good Gifts for Non-Artists?
How about those new colored pencils from Crayola that you 'twist' up like an eyeliner? I like them, they are super useful for so many things, and you don't have to sharpen them.
Reply:Carving can become very frustrating very fast (trust me), so I wouldn't recommend that for beginners. Clay, though--modeling clay is excellent for beginners. It's relatively cheap, it's completely hands-on, and it gets people thinking in three dimensions. Sculpey is a pretty reliable polymer-clay manufacturer, and they make clay in all sorts of colors.

You might also want to try out a fabric-dying method called batik. All you'll need is some cheap cloth, paraffin or beeswax, and dye (there's all sorts of cheap fabric dyes on the market--I think you can even use food coloring as long as it's not on cloth intended to be worn).

The concept of batik is that you paint a design on your cloth with wax--and wherever the wax is, there the dye will NOT be. (a website that explains it really simply --%26gt; http://www.craftbits.com/viewProject.do?... )

Well, there's two ideas. I hope these help out!

Best Wishes!
Reply:For the youngest child...a simple coloring book and crayons. A pack of colored paper, scissors, glue and some fun stickers.

For the older child, I'd suggest a good book, like the one on the link below and a set of prepackaged art supplies that can be found at any craft store.

http://www.dickblick.com/zz686/08/?wmcp=...

For young adults, and I'm assuming you mean the 12-17 set? Or ev3en a bit older, say 15-19? The best way that I ever found to approach it was to give them something that meshes in with thier interests. For instance, if they are interested in music, then give them a book about "logo" art....soemthing that will help them create a CD cover, and a simple sketch book and pencil set. A craft kit, perhaps, one that gives them the essentials, but allows them to use their own sense of color to complete the project. I gave my daughter (aged 22) a set for creating her own faux stained glass art bottles....she loved it, and she isn't into art at all.

Intertesting question...good luck!
Reply:for teens a sketchbook with a unique cover, something suited to that person and a variety of different sized pens would work very well. a variety of colored markers or colored pencils to go with it may also be good, depending on the person- black and white seems to be in these days. A re-fillable water color brush-pen would be a good alternative for a more emo- teen.

For a non- artist doodling and sketching is the easiest thing for them to get interested in. alot of people doodle, in the margins of school work, or what ever, and haveing a book specifically for that might inspire them to do more. or spark some ideas.

I need an art journal (like a medical journal, not a write my personal experiences journal)?

This art Journal needs to discuss or analyze pieces of art from the begining of art history to the renisaunce(sp?). This is for a source on an art report.

I need an art journal (like a medical journal, not a write my personal experiences journal)?
First...what art are you studying? If it is western....

For a Journal of Western Art...I'd start with the cave paintings, like the ones at Lascaux, make your way onto Egyptian and Mesopotamian art, the bronze and Iron age, then move forward to the Greek period, the Roman then the Byzantine. After that, I'd move onto the medieval Gothic period, the Romanesque then pre- Renaissance, to the high Renaissance. Don't forget to include the rise of printmaking and importance of manuscripts. Do include important structures.

I'd also include some history of the times as well, including movements in other art history, (invention of paper in china for example...etc.)

This is a reeeeeeaaaallly brief summery, I didn't include important works by name...you can find that in research!

Good Luck!

Where can I find custom framed art in NYC? Also, who's the manufacturer of Home Decorators custom framed art?

I really like the canvas custom framed art on Home Decorators' website and want to order some pictures. Problem is I am hesitant to order expensive art online without seeing the actual product. Does anyone know where I can a store or distributor selling similar custom framed art in or near New York City? Also, I noticed that the custom framed art on Home Decorators' website, Levitz's website and others is exactly the same. Does anyone know who is the original manufacturer of the art? This would help me to find a retailer in NYC.

What's a good book of art and architecture ranging from Ancient Greek to Romanesque and Gothic art?

I'm finishing up my third semester at school and I'm finding it difficult to sell back my copy of Gardner's Art Through the Ages (Twelfth Edition, Volume I), the book for my Ancient and Medieval Art class, because I love how comprehensive it is. (I am, however, going to sell the book back, because it's way more expensive a book than I need!) I particularly love Ancient Greek and Roman, Early Medieval, Romanesque, and Gothic art and architecture. This was the first art history class I've ever taken, and while I doubt I'll take another one during my college career, I don't want to forget how much I enjoyed the class. Do you have any suggestions for a book that covers these periods? I would prefer more images than text, mainly because I just like to look at the art and analyze it myself. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I kept my Gardiner's, too. There isn't another one to compare. I love going through it and reading.

Reply:I just kept my book (it is the exact same one). For what you would get for resale, it is going to cost you nearly that much to find an architecture book with decent pictures. If you are dead set on selling it and getting another, look into used books. I love powells.com

My art teacher...I LOVE ART but I just have one problem.?

My art teacher is just so mean to me. I love the sub. But lets face it. i will never be able to enjoy art again.

Let the teacher do what she wants to do.Don't let her affect ur interest in the subject.continue with ur work.if the teacher becomes intolerable complain to the authorities!

Cool art project...ideas?

hey all!

so i was just assigned a project for art class.

the idea is that you have to show a sort of a "split" personality.

you have to basically present a picture of yourself, but in a way that it shows YOU, as you are, and then the DARK side of you.

some things that past art students did was that they showed a beautiful picture of themselves, and when they flip a trasparancy onto the picture, it shows them, but with signs of depression and stress.

another one was a picture of the persons eyes, beautiful eyes, and when you roll them the other way, it shows dark eyes with words of hatred

what are some good ideas you can suggest to me that will make my art shine?

thanks :D

:D

Cool art project...ideas?
Make a painting first off. Take a pencil and draw ur basic outline of yourself. Then draw in the details. Then on the right side draw your normal personality. If your a happy person, draw a smile onto the right. Then make that side look happy and have sparkling eyes if you know what i mean. Eyes that smile in their own special way. Then on the other side draw your alter ego or a sad and angry person on the left. Have it merge. If youve seen pictures of a person who on one side is an angel and the other side is a demon i think you know what im talking about. Hope that helped!
Reply:that's a really stupid project .
Reply:I would make a collage of things I liked and things I didn't like combining to make the picture. Then make a brick background and write a word in every brick.... just an idea...
Reply:use pop ups or fabric. maybe you should mix colors to really make them pop out.

Important art in history?

Hey guys,

Doing a homework assignment in my history of design class, and have to write about six important pieces of art, two have to predate 1200 AD, two must be in the 1800's, and two after 1970. I am having trouble finding any art the really defines an era, and I want to write about something that really stands out in history. Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially for the pieces i need that predate 1200 AD. Please let me know if you know of any, send me links, or just the names of the art. thanks.

Important art in history?
With Those date in mind it might be interesting to compare how art portrays women. There is a statue called Venus of Willendorf from about 22,000 BC to compare to more modern figures of women.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_of_Wi...
Reply:I'll add the Athena from the temple in Athens for another ancient statue.

For the 1800's, you could look at the first exhibit of the French Impressionists.

For the modern period, Andy Warhol, and Lichtenstein, both doing pop art. Or the current British favorite, a fellow who displays dead, sectioned cows and sheep, suspended in preservative.
Reply:1800s:

--Claude Monet; look at "Woman With a Parasol" (1886), "Camille At Her Deathbed" (1879)

--Degas; look at "The Rehearsal," c. 1879, "Woman and

Chrysanthemums," 1862/65

--Van Gogh; look at "Sunflowers," 1887; "Starry Night" 1888

After 1970:

I would look at Pop Art--Andy Warhol, in particular--his painting of Marilyn Monroe called "Marilyn;" and "Sixteen Jackies"

Do I have to be good at art to be an art teacher?

I am currently an art ed major but it seems like all my fellow classmates are very gifted in art. I think I am creative and I enjoy art but I am not that talented. I have always felt intimidated about my drawing/painting skills, which is part of the reason I want to teach, to give kids confidence. I want to teach art at an elementary level. I also want to get a masters in art ed or art therapy. I just want to make sure I'm not getting myself into something that I will regret.

Thanks!

Do I have to be good at art to be an art teacher?
My art teacher is really good, but she's not like an expert or anything. If you're creative and are passionate about becoming an art teacher, then I don't see why not. Just make sure you know the basics.
Reply:You will have to be certified by the state department. This will tell if you are good or not.Art teachers have talents in one or more areas. The question you need to ask yourself is if I am good or not with kids. They are your first customer and what keeps art teachers in business.
Reply:honestly i think that you should do what you want to do...as long as you are creative and love kids you should be just fine :) the point is to enjoy what you do, and in your case inspire others...you know what it feels like to feel less than someone else, so you would be the perfect art teacher because you can relate to that...you would be able to recognize a student that is feeling intimidated and then try to bring out the best in them, while boosting their self confidence...i want to be a teacher myself but im undecided at whether i want to major in art or something else...i feel like you would be an AWESOME art teacher...so my advice is to go for it! i think you would enjoy it!
Reply:My high school music teacher was completely tone-deaf, but she was a great teacher. (Percussionist) She was one of those people that helped you through a problem until you understood it, and that bubble popped. Once you understand something for yourself, you can move on from there on your own- but you will always need someone more experienced, because they know what to look out for and the reason why. Teachers are a guide that keeps the inspiration flowing among others.

Now in college, I had the exact opposite experience. My clarinet professor was an outstanding musician, and guess what- we spent most of our practice time talking about what he played and where, and how it sounded, and where he went to school, etc.. I didn't learn a lick of anything from him. All narcissism aside, he still didn't infuse anything further into me. The bum.

Because you are going to be teaching to ages 10 and below, I would worry less about your art skills, and more about what teaching art does for children, and why people need to be creative. You sound like you're on track. Good luck!
Reply:I think what would be more important is to be able to teach and communicate. Teaching is a lot like coaching. You don't need to be a professional in what you teach or coach, but you need to be professional in your approach and management of the principles involved. Encourage students to grow and explore - that's the best thing you can bring - your talent as an artist will fall behind that.
Reply:You don't have to be good at art to be a good art teacher. At middle school, most 6th grade teachers are required to teach art regardless if they have any skills or knowledge in that area. The Art teacher (for 7th and 8th) gets hit up to teach a history class every couple of years, despite that not being her forte.
Reply:First, how are you doing in the art classes that you are taking at college? If you are going to continue with your goal of being an art teacher, hopefully you are getting at least Bs in most of these classes. Do you think you'd be able to continue getting grades at about that level or higher? If not, you might find it a little harder to get hired as an art teacher (there are a lot fewer job openings for art teachers than teachers of most other subjects, so you do want to keep that in mind). If your grades are ok, I wouldn't worry too much about not being an amazingly gifted artist. Also, lower grades in art skills classes could be balanced out with higher ones in art history and eduction courses.

The art projects the elementary students at my school do are usually pretty simple but are designed to teach them about concepts of art. Your ability to teach these concepts will be more important than your technical skills. I think it's great how you want to give the students confidence - I'd like to have you as my art teacher!

When I was in grad school, I had a roommate who was getting her PhD in art ed. She had done her Bachelor's and MA in English, and she hadn't done much study of art at all before beginning her PhD program! Her actually artwork was, honestly, not great. Yet, she was almost ready to graduate from a good university with her PhD in art ed.

Have you thought about possibly either getting your certification in elem ed or getting it in both elem ed and art ed? I live in an area where there a big overall shortage of teachers, but art ed majors still have a tough time finding jobs. Regular elementary classroom teachers do so many art-related activities in their classrooms that you might feel satisfied with teaching there.

In short, if you finish your degree in art ed and get a job as an elem art teacher, I don't think you will regret it at all. What might cause you to regret it would be if you're not able to find work as an art teacher. You'll have to think about what your chances are (and ask some professors in your dept how many of the recent grads in your major are working as art teachers), and then make your decision about what to do. Good luck!

Why is there a martial art for everything in Japan.?

In japanese martial arts, theres an art for everything...

Hand-to-Hand - Jujutsu

Sword - Kenjutsu, Kendo

Spear - Sojutsu

Staff - Bojutsu

Shurikenjutsu, jojutsu, ect.

Why aren't they all taught in the same art like Kung Fu.

Typically Kung Fu teaches all weapons... Theres no such thing as a chinese art that teaches weapons only. School vary, but no matter what if you want to learn how to use a chinese straight sword, you have to do Kung Fu, and learn Hand-to-Hand and other weapons, but in Japanese martial arts, if i want to learn just the Katana, i learn Kenjutsu or Kendo.

Why is there a martial art for everything in Japan.?
Hi there

Actually all these arts can be taught under one school. The problem you will have is that arts like Karate, Judo, Kendo etc aren't pure samurai arts there a modern equivalent. All the techniques that no longer have any practical application aren't taught any more by these schools.

Most of the Koryu arts have all the elements you have described above. Kukishinden or Kukishin ryu have all of the above techniques you mention and more. And I'm sure there will be other Koryu ryu ha that teach a complete system. The closest you will get in the west are schools that teach Okinawan Kobudo jutsu but again these are not koryu samurai schools.

Finding a good one outside of Japan is very difficult mainly because a westerner would have had to spent many years learning all the individual kata for each brach. And trust me just from what you have listed theres tons of it!

I have to admit even the Japanese schools wont generally teach you weapons until you have learned the unarmed side of things with the exception of iaido and kendo schools and both of these arent teaching a complete system.

And the chap above me is quite correct. Any ture samurai would have studied the job lot.

Best wishes

Reply:They are all taught in the same art.

In the age where there was a purpose for such things, many of these techniques were taught in the same places. They are all part of a Samurai's repertoire. He used almost all of these things on the battlefield, did he not?
Reply:I liked a lot of the answers already posted but I wanted to add an analogy that might make it easier to imagine...

Lets take a western historic example (or a fanastybased like Lord of the Rings, etc)...

Would the guy working a catapult way up on the battlements in the castle need to learn how to shoot a bow from a horse? Would he need to learn staff? Not likely.

The needs and the circumstances of the culture/time/position, etc will dictate what the warrior needs.

The samurai in different periods had different needs.

There are some styles that teach it all. I watched the show "Way of the Warrior" on TV which featured such a style almost 20 years ago and then met the same teacher here in Japan as well. It is still here. But only here...
Reply:Hi Keith,

Without having to write a tale of an epic proportion. Here's a shorter version. It has a lot to do with attitude and political climate of the culture of the old days. while its true that Chinese martial arts tends to include everything in its style. The Japanese as well as the Okinawan focused mainly on what was practical for them at that time.

The Japanese samurai's did have many various forms of martial arts in their repertoire such as Archery, Spearmanship, Horsemanship swimming and of course swordmanship.

As for the empty hands system, they also did Aikijujutsu, Sumo, wajutsu and as well as many other forms of un-armed fighting.

Due to the banning of "metallic" weapons in Okinawa by the Satsuma subjugation. The Okinawan royalty focused a lot more on the empty system of fighting called "te" what we now know as "karate". The Okinawan did have martial arts weaponry in their own curriculum such as the Rokushakubo, Tonfa and other forms of specially "designed" weapons.

and lastly, why the arts was taught separately ? I suspect that perhaps because time was neither on the Japanese or Okinawan side and training on one particular art was all they could spare before heading to war or defending the castles from constant attack.

Hope this helps !
Reply:History
Reply:Ok this would take a long explanation of Japanese history. But suffice it to say that during the edo period things became divided into schools as family clans became less powerful and no longer had armies to train.

Also samurai would generally only learn three weapons, sword, archery (kyudo), and a polearm or spear, and generally they would specialize with one.

Shuriken jutsu, bojutsu, and other weapons are generally from peasant martial arts instead of bushi (warrior) martial arts.
Reply:They've had a long history of tribal warfare not only with each other but with Korea, China, Mongols, etc.
Reply:Speciaization. What if you don't need to know how to fight with a spear or staff?

Plus, the divisions allow more time to be focused on one weapon, rather than all weapons.
Reply:very smart people im not being mean but they are crazy people
Reply:Originally, they are all taught together.

It was called Bujutsu back then.

All the skills you mentioned above are related.
Reply:It is probably a cultural thing. Thanks for the question though. It may sparck some research.
