What do you think of this art?

Hi, so my plan is to invent my own Martial Art, after dabbling in Krav Maga, Escrima, various Karates, Jujitsu and a myriad of other arts.

I want to develop a knife fighting Martial Art that specifically trains in counters to common defenses %26amp; disarms. That's right, a Martial Art specifically designed so that if you have a knife, you easily are able to get past the substandard defenses taught in Martial Arts. It will include unconvential means of holding the knife that various Martial Arts have not addressed, along with a variety of angles and strikes, as opposed to the overhead "Pyscho" stab. Various slashes and thrusts and ways of concealing knives until in close range of your opponents. Also counters and ways to hold a knife at distance in case an opponent attempts to kick it. Additionally ways to throw knives in case an opponent runs.

My dream is to teach this Art to young struggling inner city youth in the worst neighborhoods for self defense from self defense experts.

What do you think of this art?
Wow, I haven't answered a Y!A for awhile. So, don't flame me if I forgot how to do this:

Aikido would beat your knife, hands down. All they need to do is Grab Your Wrist(tm). It's a proven fact. Stevey Seagull does it all teh t1m3z.

_ing _un...err...Wing Chun/Ving Tsun/Wing Tsun (but not Ving Chun) would invade your centerline and that would be very bad for you. I think it has something to do with double entendre of the saxuel persuasion. Hint. Hint.

Obviously Krav Maga would just kill you. With an M-16. At around 100 yards. Because nobody ever expects the Krav Maga Inquisition!

But, do it anyway. You'll make alot of money off the suckerrrrrr I mean the students of this honorable and underpriced system. Soke Necroth says that Soke Judomofo, 10th Dan of KnifeMagaJutsuDoSooDo is a great guy, a notable martial artist, and will be inducted into many Hall of Fame organizations (for a non-refundable fee of 250$ per induction, of course).

Now, give me two "t3h d34dl13z" and we'll call this one a lock!
Reply:hahaha

good stuff with the right marketing u would probably get some students how about using pink gi's so the attackers think your harmless LOL
Reply:Ok let me see if I have this correct. You want to teach a martial arts that centers around knife fighting. It is okay that you want to invent a new martial arts, but what if you dint carry a knife wherever you go?

A lot of people in the Yahoo! Martial arts category ask "Oh what is a good self-defense" and people would say "oh just carry a stun gun or pepper spray" well the problem is are you going to carry that around with you everywhere you go? For ladies that might not be a problem because they have a purse. But for guys, where are you going to put it? In your pocket?

What I am trying to get at is, that you should also incorporate some hand to hand combat too, because I am sure not everyone is going to carry a knife with them wherever they go, especially in a school setting.

And it is really important that you are a VERY experience martial artist yourself. With years of knowledge and training. Because by teaching other martial arts your teaching them how to fight if their lives are threaten.
Reply:better to hit the martial arts forums then yahoo, its to broad and individuals dont quite understand alot of what your speaking. You could email the man at the link below, he created his own system.
Reply:Think you got all the answers, eh? What if a guy has a hatchet, biaotch?
Reply:What about pointed sticks?
Reply:Go for it!
Reply:Leave crack alone.

I really hope you are joking.
Reply:It's been done already.
Reply:I like Krav Maga and Escrima. I don't like Karates and Jujitsu they suck. You will need a lot of martial art experience to even develop your own fighting Martial Art. Have you studied other martial arts before? A lot of people that try to develop there own martial arts seem more like a joke. It seem like they don't understand what the movements in that system is all about. They just watch movies and try to take all the good stuff and put it into there own martial arts. That is crap. I am not trying to be rude but just some suggestions.
Reply:Someone correct me if I'm wrong...but don't the Black Eagles in the Phillipines already practice something very similar to what you're talking about?

You also failed to mention what would define this as an "art" as opposed to a system. It sounds like you are just developing a self-defense course for those who weild knives. Arts include a cultural aspect to them (such as how Karate upholds a lot of tradition) and you mention nothing about that other than your target audience.

Also, not to sound too disrespectful but, if you've only dabbled in several arts and systems...what would qualify you to become a creator of an entire martial art? Even Krav Maga, which is realitively new, was developed by someone that actually knew and had an understanding of combat. He didn't just take a few classes here and there and decide that he knew what was best. This doesn't even take into account the generations and generations of students and teachers that worked to refine their particular arts.

I guess what I'm getting at is...can you back up your qualifications for creating a new brand of martial arts?
Reply:you should find a way to incorporate the touchless knockout....but the broken glass for defense against takedowns is engenius

sensei tom camreon perfected the move after nearly losing his life in the southside of chicago
Reply:Hmmm

I think George Dillman, Ashida Kim, and Frank Dux will have competition!

Just a suggestion, can your curriculum also include techniques that are useful against an ultimate fighter ? ;-)
Reply:This is certainly a joke, but I must have missed what the object of the parody is. On a serious note, it might be better to develop an art that doesn't require carrying a concealed weapon.

Maybe just manufacture a suit with spikes sticking out in every direction, sort of the like Hellraiser guy's head.

Reply:You know, some of the Sayoc guys train with three knives in one hand. If you can teach me how to defend against that and add an additional two on there (just to say I more than one-upped them), sign me up.

Though I'm not exactly an inner city youth. Will that be a problem?

Man I can't believe that people are taking this seriously. Priceless.
Reply:good one.

well written, even though it sounded looney with the "knife" comments it still left a shred of doubt that you were serious until the "broken glass" comments.

EDIT: you people really need to learn what the hell he is saying. the broken glass comment might give it away, but the knife thing is freaking funny if you get it. translate it.
Reply:I want my son to learn martial arts, but not what you want to teach, why would you want to teach some one how to throw a knife at some one who is running away, you sound like a psycho, I am sure your students will all end up in prison
Reply:hahahaha. LMAO. That is the funniest thing I've heard all day, thanks for brighting my day a bit.
Reply:Wow give it a try! good idea. Aim to teach it to women too. And dreams do come true so start making it a reality. let us know how it goes. I would personally like to learn that for self defense..good luck

History or Art History?

Which has more employment opportunities, a PhD in art history or a PhD in history (general)? I love history, but have a definite appreciation for art history. I would like to either be a professor in one of the two, or work in a museum, or perhaps another non-traditional route using skills obtained in one of the two.

I would think History might be in more demand, but at the same time there is probably more supply in History than in Art History, right? I would think more people probably major in History than in Art History.

Any enrollment numbers, job demand statistics, etc... would be great. The statistics should be differentiating between the two areas - I've already found stats that list all social science professors in one category - not very helpful.

History or Art History?
Ah, I personally think art history is more interesting.
Reply:I rarely rephrase a questioner's question, but in your case, I must make an exception. If your decision for either is going to be based on future job prospects, then you probably shouldn't be making the decision. There are more history Ph.D's and more positions for them in colleges and jr. colleges, but art history would have more application in related fields in the private sector - the "art" industry is much larger than the "history" industry. Both are underfunded, but welcome to the humanities. Both would give you the skills necessary to become a really good librarian, while an ABD in history would at least let you be a high school teacher with a little additional training but there is always appraisal...but never mind all that.

You don't get a Ph.D. in the humanities because of the bright future job prospects. Those future job prospects come because you are able to complete the Ph.D. and your are considered capable of adding to the body of knowledge in your chosen field. In order to complete the Ph.D. and show that you can add to the body of knowledge, you must complete a dissertation. And you won't be completing that dissertation unless you feel a bit of passion about the subject matter. Enough passion to produce a question that will lead you into libraries, archives, halls of records, private collections, and back to your laptop to find an answer while consuming a few hundred or couple thousand hours of your life.

Spin off sections of that dissertation into journal articles or maybe a book and your job prospects as a professor will be fine. Without the drive, you will end up asking a question like "Is it worth it?" half way through the dissertation and the answer will most likely be "No it is not. There aren't many jobs that will pay off my loans," and you will withdraw with an ABD.

My guess is that you should do Art History if that is the area that interests you (and the field of history that you mention by name as well). In any case, damn those torpedos and enroll if you have the desire to master either subject.

Looking for art to suit two people's taste?

My housemate and I have very different tastes in art, and yet want something to put up on our magnolia walls (which we aren't allowed to paint)

He wants photos that show an event (ie Mohammed Ali getting knocked out) and likes some abstract art, but has a very negative attitude to anything he considers to be 'pretentious'.

I, on the other hand, like a vast selection of art including art photography, cubist, modern, abstract and some impressionist (although I'm not too keen on Turner, Constable, Blake etc)

Can you think of a happy medium? I don't want a Audrey Hepburn print on my wall, or that photo of builders sitting on the crane above New York.

Looking for art to suit two people's taste?
I've become a big fan of Urban Art by the likes of Banksy and his ilk. I noticed his work after realising he's originally from my home town

This type of work is very creative and thought-provoking and of course a little bit subversive, not suitable for a family home, but ideal for adult only homes.

Here's one link http://www.banksy.co.uk/shop/

or......http://www.urbanretrolifestyle.com/2007/...

If Banksy isn't for you there are lots of similar artists that you would soon discover.

Failing that I love Van Gough and the impressionist school.

Here's some of his street art : http://www.banksy.co.uk/outdoors/horizon...
Reply:Have you seen any Basquiat or any of the late sixties industrial art I'm sorry I cant think of names but that might fall in the happy medium arena or, well it may seem a bit corny but old movie posters or reprints of old advertiesments...

Zune album art?

I just got a Zune, and was wondering where i could get album art for most of the cds i have....(download album art site.....?). cause most of the songs or cds i have came from my itunes library, and most of the album art didnt transfer or something....

so is there a site where i could just download the album art, or do i have to find the picture and resize it to the right size and right format. and if i do have to resize and stuff, what is the size i need and format i need?

or free to just any sugestions on what i should do?

Zune album art?
You can either go and look up the actual album picture and save it to your computer then right click on the album you want to change and click on Add Album Art. There isn't a need to resize it usually because the Software will usually do that for you.

I don't know if there is a place to get Album Art from.

History of Art A-Level, do universities consider it a 'Mickey Mouse' subject or an academic one?

I want to take Architecture at universtiy, my current AS Levels are Art, Biology, History of Art and English Lit. However, I am struggling with English Lit, and am really enjoying the History of Art course. But, I am worried that if i drop English Lit, universties wont favour History of Art - although some people have told me its considered a good academic. HELP!

History of Art A-Level, do universities consider it a 'Mickey Mouse' subject or an academic one?
Just phone up or email the architecture admissions tutor at some of the universities you're interested in and ask them. There's is the only opinion that's worth anything.

Can religious art ever do God justice?

I would be grateful if anyone religious could give me there oppinion on religious art. How important is it? Can religious art ever do God justice in paintings of the holy trinity ect. I would be really interested to hear the views of any Muslims on religious art, like why pictures of Allah are forbidden and what other methods of art are effective at conveying religious ideas.

Thanks

Can religious art ever do God justice?
Anyone who follows the ten commandments should not make any images of god, as that would violate the third commandment. And how can any picture depict god, if he is infinite?
Reply:In my opinion, you have to be careful when it comes to religious art. In the bible it says not to worship any other idols which some people pray to pictures, etc. For me, a cross on the wall reminds me of when Jesus died for us and it also reminds me to pray. I have pictures of the ocean, etc... that has bible scripture on it. The scripture pertains to my daily life and helps encourage me. As for doing God justice? I would say not really. It is more for us.
Reply:well i never seen that much religious Art in my life but is what i notice the most is the art that don't do Jesus any justice. the good stuff is in Rome. I never had been there and hope to visit it in my lifetime. I hope someone does a better job of answer's your question better then me.
Reply:Not sure about allah but I know in the Bible it says that it is a shame for man to have long hair. so all these paintings of Jesus with long hair are incorrect.

Feminist movement and feminist art?

I have done research on feminist art and am still confused. There were 3 waves of feminism, 1920s, 1960-80 and 1990+. Relating these to feminist art, most of it emerged during 2nd wave as first was mostly about white women equality, right? and then how did art differ in the 3rd wave? it was geared more towards women of different origins / colors / backgrounds?

Also, feminist art is shown even before the 1st wave so it's been present for a long time but just not seen in pop culture until now? as we are currently looking at old pieces of art and the feminist sayings?

Am I correct, I'm still very confused. Thanks for answering my questions.

Feminist movement and feminist art?
in the 1800s women were not permitted to go to art school, when they did, their tuition was doubled. if they became artists, they did so b/c their fathers were artists or they hired tutors. even so, at this time, about 25,000 women artists existed. few were displayed in museums.

about this time, the Symbolists portrayed women as the femme fatale -the destruction of men. when women depicted themselves, they did so in family relationships or domestic scenes - more accurate and less subjective.

thus, more women would have gone into the art field in the 1900s.

frida kahlo is a feminist mexican artist. there were many who were not white.

there have been some current exhibits....WACK! was one.

How can I do art on the computer?

Okay, this isn't as stupid as it sounds, but I know there's some software out there that lets you do art on the computer. I guess an example of art would be some cartoon pic. on DeviantArt website. How can I do art like that? How can I make my art look more...professional? Below is an example of what I'm talking about (in case you're confused):

http://jackademus.deviantart.com/ar...

so...how can I make my art (the colors...the technique) make it more like the example link? Is there a software that lets me do that?

How can I do art on the computer?
It's called Adobe Photoshop and you can get a table so you can"draw" with a "pen" for the computer. If you cannot afford Photoshop I recommend GIMP, it has many features of Photoshop and costs nothing.

GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.
Reply:If you are really going for an artistic effect that resembles traditional (hand drawn or hand painted) art a bit more, you'll want a tablet to use instead of just a mouse. Even if you don't want to go traditional, the extra control you'll get with a tablet will be worth it if you create a lot of digital art.

http://www.wacom.com/index2.cfm?CMP=KNC-...

Also, while Photoshop is fantastic (I use it myself), some people also really like Painter for artistic digital work since it has a little more focus on making traditional looking art. (Like if you want to make something look like an oil painting.)

Reply:google paint.net and or gimpshop and look at their tutorials see if thats what your looking for
Reply:Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Acrobat are great programs...
Reply:The link is broken, but what you can do is buy Adobe Photoshop (or use a trial version to try it out). People at DeviantArt usually hand-draw their art, scan it, and then color it using Photoshop.
Reply:yes actually all you have to do is download a clear non colored photo that you can color save it in your pictures and right click that photo it will say open with. and seect paint color it in and vhaula there you go preety picture.
Reply:i just use microsoft paint and then touch up with photoshop

well i really use kpaint and gimp but you prob never heard of those and the above are just the windows eq.

Is studying art at college a waste of time?

I love art so much but my parents think its a waste of an a level but i hate other subjects and art is the onething i always do well in cos i enjoy it so much

I want to go to art college but my mum says i will never get a career with it... is this true wat options do i have for art careers in the future?

thanks!

Is studying art at college a waste of time?
Do what you want with your life..if your passion is art, go into an artistic career. You are living life for you and no one else. I went into a college program that I have no interest in, and realized I enjoy art the most and now I have wasted a year and am changing my program. My parents also said I wouldn't be able to find a career with art but back then I listened to them which was stupid of me...now I wasted time and money. I would rather be doing something I love and make little money than do something that feels like a chore and make tons of money. Some art careers you can have is graphic designer, creative advertising, art teacher, painter...etc.. Just do some research on the net. Good luck and don't make the same mistake I did! :)

Reply:With art, you will probably only be able to get a job as an art teacher. You could possibly teach on a college level if you were willing to get your masters/PhD.
Reply:I'm sorry to your mum, but she is wrong. No matter what you enjoy, with passion like yours you will get a job. Think of how much of the business world relies on art (advertising, marketing, building design). Think of how huge of a business the art world is. Think of how much of the multi billion dollar entertainment industry is focused on art (film, television, print). There are more jobs in art related careers than anything else I can think of. And, in case money is important. If you are good at it, you will get rich. Like Andy Warhol, like Ansel Adams, like Steven Spielberg, and so many more.
Reply:Unless you want to teach art to students in 1st-12th grade or work in an art museum its not going to get you a long-term job or regular pay-check. I took art appreciation as a humanities course but wasn't interested in it as a career. My recommendation is that if you want to try and make money in art do it on the side and study something that you can have a future in if your art sales or talents don't work out especially as you get upwards of 40+
Reply:Is up to your, if Art is your major goal, you should go with it.
Reply:Do you mean creating art yourself, or studying art history and/or current trends?

If you mean yourself, look into Graphic Design. That's a GREAT career that requires artistic talent and isn't hard at all to find work in.

If you mean studying other peoples' art, then you would likely end up teaching it. I'm not too sure about other things you can do with that kind of degree.
Reply:Hello!

I don't believe studying Art is a waste of time. If it is a passion of yours and you TRULY believe in your talent, go after it. Have a secondary plan of income just in case your passion may not pay "your worth," but remember this, it is your life, and you will never know what you can achieve if you don't try...

From the little research I've done, it seems that history will have a less competitive job market in coming years.

However, do whichever you're most interested in. If you're sufficiently interested in both that the employment-opportunities question is a tiebreaker... good luck deciding! :)

I do art, but my parents think it's a waste of time, shouldi just ignore them?

I'M 27 . I like to draw, and do computer graphics and that's what i do all the time when i have time. i live with parents so they always see that i'm doing art and stuff in my room. I even show them but .. they always ask "Is this gonna make you money?" and then i say No..

Anyways, they think that art is a waste of time if i don't make money out of it. But i do it for my own happiness and as a mental exercise. it's my passion, my life.

im just a quiet person with no friends, but I enjoy doing art.

My parents will never accept me doing art. Instead they would love me to be a talkative business guy. By the way my parents are immigrants and always did labor and worked hard for their money. So my father always feels that anything i do should be for money.

I do art, but my parents think it's a waste of time, shouldi just ignore them?
Nothing you enjoy doing that hurts no other creature is a waste of time. Ask them if they would feel better if you were hanging out in bars with friends; not that that's a bad thing, in moderation.

I do not know your financial situation, but by age 27 shouldn't you have your own place? Then you wouldn't have to excuse your activities to anyone.
Reply:i'm having the same prob here. i'm banned from doing anything related to art. what am i supposed to do? i'm 15. Report It

Reply:it depends how talented you R on these arts

if not you do it as a hobby
Reply:Not so much of ignoring them but maybe helping them out. I am a 30 year old female and it has taken enough courage to say..., " Hey my stuff looks pretty good. Maybe I should try to sell it."

Computer Graphics. Wow. Now how do you think they do the movies anymore. That is if I am thinking right. I have a cousin who has a job in computer graphics and believe me it does pay a nice ball of green cash!

A lot of parents think differently. Like mine has been pushing me saying you need to sale this stuff. It's that good. So now I am finally doing it after all this time.

I honestly think they are concerned about you. They may not see it the way you do.

Let me just remind you of this. There was a man a long time ago. He didn't have nothing but he loved to draw. He drew this and that and tried to make money with it. After a while he had a little here and there and occasionally they were some that said no. Well this guy had a little friend. Believe it or not it was a little rat and he had come very close to it. Then came the day when he had to move and live him behind. He never forgot his friend. Well to make a long story short that friend ment so much to him he drew him. I think you might know him. Although the rat had a different name that what his dream was built on. That little rat after all those years became know as Mickey Mouse.

NO KIDDING.... I am not sure how right I got all of that but I know it's very close.

Don't let someone talk you out of or even take away something you dream of. Keep it up. Even if it is something you only want in your heart or in your room.

Best of luck to you.

PS..., I learned to draw when I was sick with a brain tumor. It was my way of letting go of things that bothered me all the time. I know your parents are worried about where you would go with your art. Maybe you should consider selling some of it to show them that it's worth something.

You know what makes you happy so keep doing it.
Reply:I think that your parents are just worried about your financial security and that is understandable. (I know how you feel because I was in the same situation with my parents.)

I think you should try to explain to your parents (again) why art makes you happy. You could possibly show them what jobs you would want in the field or even have a back-up job just in case you are not making enough money with your art. You need to try and explain that you understand that you will not be making enough money but you have different choices of what you can do to make more money.

In the end if you are truly happy with doing art then continue to do that. It won't be necessarily ignoring your parents but you do need to do what makes YOU happy not what makes your parents happy. The will eventually understand you choice. (Mine did.)
Reply:Art isn't hurting anyone around you, so who cares what others think about what you do? If it's something you enjoy doing then you shouldn't stop, despite what your parents say. Art may not always be a really lucrative career, but people do make money with it. Think about it- almost everything around you was designed by an artist. An artist designed your computer monitor, and the logo on that monitor. An artist designed your computer desk, or the pattern on the sheets of your bed. An artist helps to set up camera shots in movies and t.v. Your parents may not understand it, but that doesn't make it a waste of time. I don't understand physics, but does that mean physics is a waste of time? I think not.
Reply:You are way ahead in the game of life...you have passion

which is in short supply in this greedy, material country.

Unfortunately there is a huge gap between you and your

parents that probably will never close in this regard. I'm

sure that when you grow into your art and find the genre

that you can make your life's work, they will see that you

are dedicated to it. Eventually, the happiness they see

in you will tell them enough. I think they just don't want

to see you struggle as they did. Let them know what

a beautiful struggle art is.
Reply:Your parents just want the best for you especially if they had to work hard for their money. I do hope you have a job and don't depend on them for money because otherwise they have a reason to complain. You are 27 years old already. You can make money from your art you just need to know where to look. If you enjoy it so much you find a job that has to do with your art, I did and I am very happy about it. Show your parents that you are happy with what you are doing and tell them that you hope they can accept that you are happy with what you do in your spare time and that you can't be what they want you to be because you would not be happy.
Reply:As long as you really are working hard for the money you do make, what you choose to do in your free time is up to you. In addition, who knows, someday this could be making you money. Tell them it's an investment in your future, whether it makes money or not.

Have you considered moving out? There's not a thing wrong with loving art and drawing, I think it's an admirable trait. If you want to avoid the daily harping on your choices, separating from your parents is a good idea.

All parents want their kids to make lots and lots of money and have a better life than they did, blah blah, but truth is, sometimes they make it worse by making your childhood kind of... naggy. As long as this is a good, constructive hobby, it should be fine.
Reply:definitely stick with it! your 27, they dont really have much say in what you do anymore. btw...why are still at home? and YES you can make money off of it. Look around for comp graphics jobs, theres plenty out there. post secondary schooling may be an asset, but your 27...get a good job to pay for school, learn to be a graphic designer and youll make tons of cash! i love to draw and my parents supported me even though i wasnt going to be turning it into a career. you can! go for it!

and maybe get your own place...
Reply:I may be biased but my daughter was making money with her artwork when she was not yet out of high school. Do your parents want you to live with them? I know that some cultures encourage this but if their attitude is somehow discouraging and/or compromising your following your bliss then perhaps you need to break away and follow your own path.
Reply:Parents are usually wrong anyways keep making art enter a few contests and if you don't win big deal as long as you like it. Get a job that has something to do with art like interior design, graphic design or just something for cash and do art for fun. And move out of your parents house then they cant say what your doing is a waste of time cuz they wont be there.
Reply:Don't ignore your parents. If anything work harder to have a good relationship with them.

At 27 it wouldn't be a bad idea to get your own place. If it's just to not hear anyone else's crap.

You can make money at art if you want to, but if it's what makes you happy don't trade that for cash. It's a bad trade. Your happiness is your repsosibility. So be happy.
Reply:You are following your natural desires and talent. To be able to express oneself artistically is an amazing gift.

I too have migrant parents, so I understand where you are coming from.

Computer graphics can make you money by the way.

Enrol yourself in a course (27) and follow that dream.
Reply:Sorry but I kinda agree with your parents. If your art is not able to support you then you need to put it on the back burner for a while and try and find a job that can get you out of their house. At almost 30 you should be settling into your life not waiting for it to begin. If you want to make it a career that is great but it seems a little to late you should have started back in school. Once you get out on your own I more than encourage you to draw or paint but only as a hobby until you can make a living off it.

How does life imitate art?

I'd like some examples of life imitating art. If possible don't give me historical examples of art about wars and now we're fighting a war again. This to me is more of an example of how history tends to repeat itself. Art is not easily defined by people who love it and try to capture it, but in my perspective art represents things in life. I am not finding how life imitates art. Please help me get past my ignorance in this matter.

through ones imagination, and or a perception of what said art represents......

Do you think computer generated art/graphics is "true art" Why? What does art have to have to be "True art"?

Who and what defines "true Art"? Why or why not is Computer generated art, "true art"?

Do you think computer generated art/graphics is "true art" Why? What does art have to have to be "True art"?
I create digital art and I believe that it is just like any other type of medium. The people that think that just because they have Photoshop they can create professional looking art are sadly mistaken. That would be like someone that has a paintbrush and some paint thinking that they can create something that people would want hanging in their homes. While they may create art, would anyone buy it. If they want to just do it for themselves more power to them, but you have to understand the medium before you can be considered an artist using it. That is why digital art is real art. There are those (and I like to think I am one) who understand the programs, but not only the programs they also understand the basic principles and elements of art that you have to know whether your a watercolorist or a sculptor or a digital artist. I used to teach art at the high school level and the most important thing next to creativity is understanding the rules. If people are upset because you can print as many copies of your digital art piece as you want then I ask them to look at printmaking as an artform, it has the same general principle, you can make multiple prints from a silk-screen or lithographic printing but yet those are still considered art. Photography is another great example, still art but can be massed produced. While I have nothing against traditional methods, I think it is great that a new medium has been introduced in the last few decades.
Reply:yes,

it still takes talent and practice also 75% of computer art is started by hand with an old fashion paper and pencil.
Reply:It's the idea that counts and the skill with which it is executed. A computer is just a tool. I've seen a bunch of really great computer generated art, and I've also seen a lot of terrible "paintings". Art is something that makes you go, WOW!
Reply:Many people use "Tablets" to create art, painting pieces in photoshop. The tablet acts as a virtual canvas and can recognize brush stroke pressure as well. If you saw some pieces done using these tablets its diffcult to tell if they are acrylic/watercolo or photoshop.
Reply:I think computer generated art can be true art if the artist puts enough creativity into it and doesn't just stick to stamps, models and very little imput.

My husband uses Photoshop, Painter, Poser, Illustrator, and Bryce and most of his pictures take about 2 months of 3 hours a day work. I call it art. However at artshows, they only call it art if you sign it and state on the work that you will not make multiple copies. (Multiple copies change it from original work to "prints.")
Reply:I think that a work that required thought to make and has beauty is art. The danger with computer-generated art is that some people will hastily produce pictures, and as a result they are of poor quality. Computers also allow many people without artistic talent to produce things. There is some very good quality CG art though. Deviantart.com (the deviant doesn't mean it's bad or anything) is a good place to look for high-quality CG art
Reply:I sure do...I can't do it to save my life...I work in what many calll more traditional art, but I envy those with the talent and patience to work digitally.

Work of Art?

To be labelled a "work of Art", a painting, sculpture or other art form should display certain qualities that are unique. However, over the past century there has been a decline in the quality of prize-winning artwork and it is now possible for quite ordinary pieces of art to be labelled "masterpieces" whilst true works of art pass unnoticed. Do you agree or disagree? Give me you reasons. Thanks.

Work of Art?
I totally agree! I mean if a so called artist can present her unmade dirty bed as a piece of artwork, what is the art world coming to? What happened to nice works of art, not necessarily aesthetic pieces, but pieces that actually mean something, I'm not an art lover as such, but I do know what I like and I certainly don't like some of this 'modern art' rubbish!
Reply:Thank you. :) Report It

This list is a great overview of galleries in San Diego.

I would also try the student and faculty shows at local universities. They often sell work and you can get some great pieces for "bargain" price. Who knows... someone may be famous someday. :-)

How would you define "literary art"?

In my new novel, I've created an artistic term coined "Literary Art" or "Lit Art" for short; it's defined on taking a piece of literary works of art in writing, like a poem, and interpreting it into pieces of art like painting, photos, sculptures, etc. Let's see how many creative answers for "Literary Art" we have here. The most creative, interesting, innnovative and unique one is awarded 10 points. (P.S. If there's such a thing as literary art, please let me know along with the definition or meaning of it. Someone suggested I try post this question in this category.)

How would you define "literary art"?
Literature is literally "acquaintance with letters" as in the first sense given in the Oxford English Dictionary (from the Latin littera meaning "an individual written character (letter)"). The term has generally come to identify a collection of texts or works, which in Western culture are mainly prose, both fiction and non-fiction, drama and poetry. In much, if not all of the world, texts can be oral as well, and include such genres as epic, legend, myth, ballad, other forms of oral poetry, and the folktale.

I need to know about all the art galleries in the Hyde park, Chicago area?

I'm doing a group project in my art class. We have to choose an art community, visit art galleries, museums or centers. Pick an art work and interview the artist or the person who is exhibiting the art work about the art piece. I know about the hyde park art center but I'm not familiar with any art galleries. Can somebody help me?

I need to know about all the art galleries in the Hyde park, Chicago area?
Besides the DuSable Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry. The one I know of is the Smart Museum of Art (at the univ of chicago, 5550 s. greenwood) or the University of Chicago Library, to see if the have any special archives of art. You may wanna try the South Shore Cultural Center (they sometimes have events of art showings). Hope this helps!

Work of art?
Why is this in psychology?

Because art can make people think, react and also do the head in.

Is something you've created not getting the attention you think it deserves? Pass unnoticed? What constitutes a "true" work of art?

However much time, thought and effort a person puts into creating a thing there is no specific formula that can guarantee appreciation and/or understanding from an audience (even of 1.)

Make it because you want to. Enjoy it because you do.
Reply:Well art can be functional even if it's for aesthetic use; after the wheel was invented, they didn't frame it and never make another one.

I think it depends on what is interesting or masterful to the most number of people at the time, since art is no longer only enjoyed by aristocracy
Reply:well coming from a musical background i can understand what your saying? But it's all in how the you interpret the word "work of art". See to me it means exactly what it says just a work of art exp. "piece of art" Now on to your true question "it is now possible for quite ordinary pieces of art to be labelled "masterpieces" whilst true works of art pass unnoticed" and while that is true from my studies it has always been that way. think back.....no true master piece was truly appreciated untill sometime later while the present works from that time are forgotten by now. so in my opinion i agree but i also believe its truly a great piece then it will stand the test of time and be truly appreciated eventually.
Reply:Why is this in Psychology?
Reply:I agree. Reasons : Media hype and technological advancement. It's now so easy to create "works of art" and media is so quick to label them "masterpieces" for commercial purposes. However, true masterpieces will, in time, come to be recognized and appreciated.

Creative and art director??

Im 17, i live in oxfordshire (uk) and im currently in my last year of a levels doing art media and drama. I came second in my art class and my next media exam is on advertising that i got to choose! I am really inspired by advertising and art and would love to one day work my way up to be a creative director or art director!

What uni and degree do you suggest me going to? Do you have any useful info about making my own portpholio? How hard is it to make it into the job? Shall i start volenteer work now or while im at uni? part time job while at uni?

thanks

Creative and art director??
It sounds like what you want to do is either advertising or graphic design. If you prefer working on the idea and concept end of advertising then pursue an advertising degree. If you prefer actually creating or designing the product itself then you should pursue graphic design.

Both advertising and graphic design are very popular fields these days, so there are a lot of people vying for jobs right now. Getting work would be a little tough just because of the amount of competition, but if you stick with it you should be fine.

I can't really speak about the portfolios since I'm not sure which field you're trying to pursue. Graphic design and advertising portfolio are very different things, so addressing that would depend on which field you're thinking about pursuing.

As for volunteer work, I would suggest you decide which field suits you better before you concentrate on that aspect of it. Spend a year or so at university figuring out which field interests you more, and once you've decided then try volunteering. If you find some volunteer work that you think will help you decide, then go ahead it take it, but I think you should concentrate primarily on your classes for the first year or so to find your direction before you venture elsewhere.

Good luck at university, and I hope you find your direction.
Reply:wow lots of questions.

Is there a martial art that could be considered "American"?

I've always wondered that.

Brazil has BJJ and Capoeria, the UK has catch wrestling and Queensbury boxing, France has Savate, China has wushu, Isreal has krav maga, Korea has TKD and Hapkido, Japan has Karate, Judo and many other arts, Thailand has Muay Thai, and Indonesia has Penjak.

However, for a country that's 230 years old and has had much conflict in its history, there seems to be no martial art that could be considered truly "American".

The 2 arts that could probably be considered the closest to being considered American martial arts would be "Dirty Fighting" (Which are simply banned Queensbury boxing rules and a few rudimentry wrestling moves combined) and American Kempo, which has a philosiphy that is American, but it's hardly a widespread art in this country as TKD is in Korea and BJJ and Capoeria is in Brazil.

If I'm sounding ignorant about other fighting styles that are taking root in the USA, please correct me. Thank you :)

Is there a martial art that could be considered "American"?
There are a lot of "fighting systems" that have been springing up in America because of the growing popularity of MMA competitions. Militech Fighting System being a good example.

Any of these will work to combat an attack from most martial artists. Instead of "open hands", I prefer the ****** hammer!
Reply:america has no martial arts style to call its own....none at all...tae bo is simply a workout thing..never meant to be considered a real martial art...

Reply:Kenpo sounds right. It is an american MA system, started out in Hawaii with the "Black Belt Society" and then spread to the mainland thanks to people like Ed Parker and others.

go to this Faq from Judoinfo.com. use the contents to locate american kenpo and u can read some history about what i mentioned above. enjoy!

http://www.judoinfo.com/books/faq2.htm

i myself am a student of one of the original schools and training methods, i hate to say it, but other kenpo schools here in hawaii like "Universal Kempo" and Kajukenbo schools aren't as good. I've seen it myself when i visited friends kenpo classes, and they train a little too "soft". remember that the original purpose of the system was for "street-wise self defense" it;s mentioned in the faq. here in Hawaii, you can easily trace these kenpo roots and see if you're training under the orinal Emparado methods or someone else who's just making money.
Reply:sorry, i dont think so that america got any martial arts. as u said that they are capable to do dirty fighting. bcoz martial arts should be learnt from the childhood and so, there's no real master to teach.
Reply:I don't believe that the US has it's own style of martial art. The dirty boxing to which you referred would not, in my opinion, qualify as an art because it lacks any historical or artistic value. As for the some of the previous answers, Tae Bo is simply an aerobics program made popular by a former martial arts competitor not an art. Second, neither Beretta nor Glock is made in the US they are Italian and German made respectively. If you are going to make ridiculous comments at least get your facts correct.
Reply:What about BRUCE LEE that started JEET KUNE DO within the United States? Okay, he was Chinese and had his formal training there but it was in California that he started his school. And one of his students was Chuck Norris. Actually, ten years ago I met one of his former students who is older now and I'm sorry, but I don't remember his name, but he is very humble in everyday he has learned.
Reply:boxing? lol seems like it

but america shudn't feel left out veitnam is one of the only asia contries without a martial arts of their own XD

What is art?

Art, if one thinks about it, is simply a description of a perceived 'something.' However, what calls for that description? Is there honestly no objective definition of 'art' at all? (note: words are not 'art', per se).

In a poem, words are perceived, meanings are gathered, and a general understanding (or misunderstanding) is derived from the literature. However, is that understanding of the art stemming from cultural values endowed during that individual's growth and development?

What is art?
Art is the elegant expression of a thought or feeling, but art need not exist only for its own sake. Art, and its many forms, is a highly subjective concept culturally, temporally, and personally.

Also, a quotation:

The purpose of art is to impart the sensation of things as they are perceived and not as they are known. The technique of art is to make objects ‘unfamiliar’, to make forms difficult, to increase the difficulty and length of perception because the process of perception is an aesthetic end in itself and must be prolonged. Art is a way of experiencing the artfulness of an object; the object is not important." (Viktor Shklovsky, "Art as Technique")
Reply:the creation of beautiful or thought-provoking works, for example, in painting, music, or writing

beautiful or thought-provoking works produced through creative activity

the skill and technique involved in producing visual representations

the ability to achieve things by deceitful or cunning methods

the activities enjoyed for the beauty they create or the way they present ideas, for example, painting, music, and literature

nonscientific and nontechnical subjects

the techniques used by somebody in a particular field, or the use of those techniques
Reply:For me, art is a word that only the artist must create. Is an expression to the world of who you are and how do you see the world. Describes the beauty of the things, even if a person or something is ugly, they create the most beautiful. Whether is through paint, writing, sculpture, etc. An art comes from the heart of the people, not only from the artist because everybody is an artist of their own.
Reply:A work of art is a metaphor for a state of mind. A poem, a painting, a sculpture, a piece of music, is the sensible representation of a state of mind such as an idea or an emotion.
Reply:"Art is a step from what is obvious and well-known toward what is arcane and concealed."
Reply:art i think is an expression (music, sculpting, writing, drawing, painting etc.)

What is art?

What makes art art? Do you create art on purpose? Does it need to be liked by someone? What can be art?

What is art?
Expression. It doesn't have to be recognized or even seen or heard. It is simply a form of expression.
Reply:I say that art is a way of expressing the way you feel on a sculpture, drawing, knitting , designing, singing, ect. Its based on how you feel when you express it in a way
Reply:Art is perception. I can see a storm cloud and call it art. Someone else can see art in a crushed fire extinguisher. Art doesn't have to be deliberately created and not everything deliberately created can be called art. It's what you see that matters.

Are all art gallery owners rude?

I had an appointment today with the owner of this art gallery for the possibility of showing my art in his gallery. We talked on the phone and he asked me how long I've been painting and I told him since I was 12 which is 13 years, so he asked to meet with me and to bring my portfolio. I did and when I sat in his office he asked me if I've ever sold any of my art or ever been in any art show. I said no since I hadn't then he just gave me this disappointed look and said sorry because they don't show work of amatuers! He didn't even really give me a chance because he didn't even look at my portfolio and treated me like some kind of beginner which I'm not! I was so hurt and disappointed! Are all gallery owners this rude?

Are all art gallery owners rude?
Now you know a question to ask on the phone before you make the trip.

On the other hand, you could have lied and/or paid a few bucks to go to a craft show to sell some of your work so the answer would be yes. Or used eBay.

But why have you been painting for 13 years and not sold anything? And why didn't you respond more assertively, since you and the works were there, "You invited me to bring my work without telling me that and I made the trip, so please look at these and talk to me about them since you have set aside the time to meet me."
Reply:yes your goin to get that response alotif your ever going to get some were your going to have lie tell them youve been in some art shows if your a good artist and can bring a lil more buety into the world its worth it. If youre sh][T doesnt sell then tell him the truth apologise for wasting his time then go take an art clas
Reply:It is always a mistake to lump people together. It is also a mistake to lie as another responder suggested. Whatever the field, a person has to take a lot of rejections before someone gives you a chance. But I am sure that the someone is out there. Keep on truckin' babe.
Reply:It would have made sense if he asked you that on the phone before you went there. I don't think they are all like that, but then again a lot of people are like that nowadays.

Using the terminology and concepts you are learning when evaluating art, compare and contrast the two works including materials used, style, meaning, symbolism, and any other aesthetic issues. Explain how the works of art fit into the context of the time period. Keep in mind that only art works that fit into the period of Ancient Art will be accepted.

You do the work searching comparing and contrasting, I supply the two works of Art

1) Pyramids - http://www.eyelid.co.uk/

2) Parthenon - temple of Athena Parthenos ("Virgin"), Greek goddess of wisdom, on the Acropolis in Athens. The Parthenon was built in the 5th century BC, and despite the enormous damage it has sustained over the centuries, it still communicates the ideals of order and harmony for which Greek architecture is known.

If these two items do not satisfy you simply look for ancient Greece, ancient Egypt, Persia, China (the Wall) etc. Good luck.

How does art created for a dictator differ from art created for a freely elected leader?

Our political world is surrounded by art and images we put together with different meanings, (eg: a good leader). Leaders have used artwork to persuade us in many ways for many many years.

How does art created for a dictator differ from art created for a freely elected leader? In what was is it the same?

How does art created for a dictator differ from art created for a freely elected leader?
Art created for a dictator has only one purpose: it is to present the dictator's policies in such a way as to impress or seduce the viewer into accepting them. In a free society, art has many "purposes" (or no purpose at all), self-expression being one of the main ones. Propaganda art is often inferior in artistic values and creativity--look at some of the crap that was produced in Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia. This is not always the case, as you would see in the revolutionary and Napoleonic paintings of David. But the artistry in these cases is always secondary to the propaganda. Also, you almost never get anything daring and new in propaganda art.
Reply:art created for dictators often portray them(the dictator) or their ideology...it is often refer to as a form of propaganda...

as for art that are created by freely elected leader varies from subject to subject. It all depends on the artist, since he has no political influence and pressure. Though if a certain artist holds the leader in high esteem than he will portray him as a highly important person

though a thing to notice is that often in Dictatorial art..the dictators are often portray as though they are almost god like..............while artist in a freely elect society would also paint his leader, but to certain extent..highlighting his quality but still retain his humanity.
Reply:Well, you could argue that in a democratic state there's a higher chance of unflattering art being produced. While under a dictator, unless you have a death wish, artwork tends to be an idealised form!
Reply:I'll make my answer short. If a person creates

artwork for a dictator, his punishment will be

quite severe if it is disliked by the creator. Not

so bad otherwise.

2. Adding album art through Windows Media Player 11. I pasted the album art into all my songs. and the re sync it to my mp3 player, still no album art appeared.

3. I tried using the Sansa Media converter, no hope.

4. I read answers to other people who needed help with adding album art. Still no sign of hope after trying.

Incorrect Album Art in Yahoo! Music Jukebox?

Jukebox displays the incorrect album art for several albums. Two off the top of my head are "Jazz" and "News of the World" both by queen, but album art for some obscure bluegrass album is displayed. I checked in both iTunes and Musicmatch Jukebox and both of those display the correct art. When i look at the tags, Yahoo incorrectly suggests those bluegrass albums for a single track on each album so i must assume that instead of using the internal artwork, the Jukebox draws from its own database. This is at least a glitch that requires fixing, or better yet adding the ability to assign art at the local level and KEEP IT FROM BEING CHANGED!

Getting my art work posted in a Gallery....?

Hi, i asked a similer question, but i though i would make it more, abroad. I am an artistic photographer and i want to get my artwork hung in a gallery or museum for modern art, like the MOMA In NYC. People love my shots and think that they are beautiful and should be in a gallery, so i asked myself, why aren't they. Does anyone own an art gallery or know how to get my art work into an art gallery? Any contacts or ideas, other than stapling it to the walls and leaving would be apprecited. Thanks so much.

Getting my art work posted in a Gallery....?
Well, MOMA is kind of an ambitious place to start. There are lots of small galleries looking for artists. You need to get your work together in a portfolio and start making contacts. There are probably a lot of gallery spaces in your area. Public libraries, art schools or cooperatives, even cafes and restaurants display art.
Reply:Copy the stuff to disk, email it, send prints, distribute it any way possible.

Go to parties, openings, if you can schmooze, politic and gladhand, do it, make connections. Get yourself known.

The art world is half politics and half talent and maybe more politics.

If you get into the MOMA, please remember me.
Reply:I owned a contemporary art gallery, and my suggestion would be to make a portfolio of your artwork. Make a professional artist's biography, mission statement, and list a way for each gallery to get a hold of you. You should call each gallery before sending your artwork package to them. Send each gallery a small representation of your work, but create it in such a way that they can not reproduce it themselves. Read up about the industry and protocols in how-to books, and make sure you are knowledgeable and well-stated when you speak to gallery owners and buyers. Good luck.

Which martial art is suited to my build?

ok i know this is a rather awkward question to ask, i i know that many people claim their martial art to be the best / most effective, without even hearing out the aims of others. So here's the info.

I'm 5'11 / 180cm

168lb / 76kg

I would probably say i'm a medium build, quite broad shoulders.

Currently i'm planning on taking up Yoga as a means of supporting my martial art choice for flexability, as well as to aid with my posture (i'm a computer geek)

The main reason i want to learn martal arts is self defense, and fitness, which in my opinion go hand in hand, if somebody were to confront me on the street, i'd be happy enough to get in a quick distraction blow and then peg it out of there.

If you want any more information on my build etc then i'd be happy to provide it. The last martial art i think i did well in was Thai Boxing, but i'm not sure if there's anywhere in southampton (england) which teaches it.

Ok... so i look forward to your answers :P

Which martial art is suited to my build?
I've done many different styles of martial arts and I've found that there isn't one style thats good for certain build. However, there are moves that work better with one build than the other. Depending on the style of martial art you want to do.

For stand up, Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do, or Karate would be great for you. If you have a longer abdomen, I'd go with Karate. If you have longer legs, you'll be great at Tae Kwon Do. If you are even in both, You'll be great at Muay Thai.

(I have unusually long legs, so I'm really good at Tae Kwon do)

For grappling, I think you'd be great at Jui Jitsu. (I'm not vouching for any particular kind.) But Graci seems popular in these forums.

I wouldn't recommend Aikido or Judo because they're both derived from Jui Jitsu and were dumbed down as to not hurt people. Since you're looking for self defense, I think you get the best of both of those in Jui Jitsu.

I would also suggest Western Boxing. It's actually really good on the streets since you don't have to lift your legs and risk a miscalculated fall. Also, since you're in England, fencing is a great martial art. The lunges in fencing can compliment most stand up martial arts to cover distance between you and the opponent.

I would suggest that you find couple of local martial arts schools and go take their introduction classes. Most schools offer these classes. It's a day or two to get to know the martial arts and decide whether you like them. I've learned that sometimes the school itself and instructors make all the difference in the kind of martial arts you like.

I hope all the information helped and good luck on your journey! :)
Reply:From what you describe you would be happy with goju / shorin would suit you well.Influenced by MASTER ITOSU who taught the founders of those methods one of his maxims was engage strike disengage.
Reply:Your build is great for "Any" Martial Art.

With some luck you may find a Thai school in your area.

If not any "GOOD" Karate school will fit your needs.

Some Ideas: Kenpo,(Kempo),Shotokan,Okinawan.
Reply:Krav Maga - any style
Reply:First ask yourself. What do I want the training for? Sport or personal development? There is a difference. They are many different systems out there to compare. My first suggestion would to visit some of your local schools or gyms and watch a class of their middle and upper rank students. The students are an extension of the teachers ability to get the most out them and it will show. Then you need to a take a freebie to really try it out. So try out a few and base your decision on what you feel.good luck in your training.
Reply:since the martial arts are about using momentum and your opponent's own strength against him (many, if not most arts) you should not have to base your training off of physical stature. personally i train in brazilian jiu jitsu so i can vouch for it's effectiveness. the only disadvantage is it does not teach multiple attacker defense..though you can use the various locks and holds you will know to use your opponent as a shield against his mates. heres some proof of the effectiveness of BJJ. watch as little royce gracie (in the white

Reply:Savate is good for people under 6'0'' b/c it depends on kicks mostly. Savate is now one of the most recognized street fighting martial arts. Savate is what I use as well as some Muay Thai and eskrima. If you have strong leg muscles then definately use Savate. It's basically French kickboxing.

Here's some savate from a show on the History Channel called Human Weapon:

Just to show you how effective Savate is against other martial arts here's a clip between a savate champ vs a Muay Thai champ: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oejU60qT1...
Reply:u should learn muy tai just cuz ur a lighter and taller person, u could use ur knees better than most, but ur gay so who cares
Reply:many martial art could suit you

Many Japanese martail arts you could take (akiado, jiu jitsu, Karate)

You could also take tae kwon do(korean)

The best fit I think is chinese Kung Fu. China has the most diverse martial art styles EVER. There are many suited for larger people, smaller people and probably medium sized people

If you are lucky enough to find a chinese Kung Fu master or grandmaster, the chances are is that you would learn many different styles, some which are better suited to you

The philosopher is also that you must learn your opponent's martial art so Kung Fu is also good at that

On top of that, Chinese Kung Fu, is the most effective martial art ever though it will probably take a VERY long time to master. You will probably not be able to master it but you could still learn several useful self-defense techniques, good coordination and speed, and flexibility
Reply:i think aikido, judo (good for street fighting i think), and capoeira would all be good fits for you

tae kwon do and jeet kun do i think you could do as well

but these are just my opinions
Reply:Dude, you would be suited to ANY traditional martial art you were interested in. Don't stress so much over which one to select as that is not as important as who will teach you.

If you have not decided on a particular discipline, check out all fo the schools available in your area. Talk with the instructor/s, observe some classes that you would participate in, talk with the other students, and find the place that intrigues and excites you the most. That is likely to be the place you'll look forward to going back to and the place you'll progress most at.

Body wise, you're really pretty average in height adn weight, so that will be no impediment at all.

Good luck

Work of Art?

To be labelled a "work of Art", a painting, sculpture or other art form should display certain qualities that are unique. However, over the past century there has been a decline in the quality of prize-winning artwork and it is now possible for quite ordinary pieces of art to be labelled "masterpieces" whilst true works of art pass unnoticed. Do you agree or disagree? Give me you reasons. Thanks.

Work of Art?
totaly agree. people who give those prises only judge from thier point of view (and it can be very twisted)..
Reply:That's your assignment -- what specific questions do you have about it? Do YOU agree or disagree?

Art is in the eye of the beholder, my friend.

Wrong album art for ipod?

So I have a 160 gig ipod classic. Most of the album art is fine, but in some cases, it uploaded the wrong file, and it won't let me change it. I figured out how to add album art to albums without art, but when the album already has art, it won't let me delete it and replace it with something else. Also, i'm not syncing, I'm manually dragging files (because I don't have a spare 160 gb on my computer). Any ideas? iTunes is already not my favorite program. :(

Wrong album art for ipod?
You might be getting wrong album art because of the way you have your music tagged (artists, albums, etc.). It happened with me a couple of times, but after a few resyncs on the computer, it fixed itself. Not a big problem.
Reply:I have this problem, too. I'm working on a solution ... I'll get back with you soon. Synching your iPod to iTunes shouldn't make or break the situation, regardless of what the last user said below. Synching your device is, in a word, garbage. You don't have optimal control of how your media goes on it. And if anything is screwed up, you can't change it. iTunes isn't my favorite program either, lol. You could try re-downloading a fresh .mp3 file and 9 times out of 10 it will work. I've had to resort to that method before.

I want to post my art online, what do I need to do to protect my art. It's a jungle out there!?

Mainly I would like to use me art as a back ground on Myspace and maybe have a gallery if people like what I do. I had some of my art scanned into PDF files and have been tweeking how they look. I guess I have to converted them into HTML document's to use them (at least that's what I gather from Pimp my Profile.com). I just want to know if I can keep my art protected if I choose to do this or is it best to not post my art. I looked on a legal website and they were carrying on about registering my art with the United States Library of Congress and Copyright office. Is all that worth it or is there a "easy button" for this process or should I just throw all caution to the wind and post the stuff? I don't know what to do! Please help!

I want to post my art online, what do I need to do to protect my art. It's a jungle out there!?
Actually, you need to convert your images into either JPEG, PNG or GIF format to post them online. Some websites only let you upload JPEGs, however.

As for the whole US Copyright Office thing, it's not worth it. See, your art is legally copyrighted to you and you alone, as you -are- the one who drew it, and you own the original copies of everything. You have as just much chance to win over an art thief in court with the original copy and a registered copyright as you do with just the original copy alone, so don't bother.

I completely understand your concern about online art thieves, though. The thing is, once your image is online, anyone can save it to their computer, print it out, whatever - if you have a problem with people doing this while still giving proper credit to you, you probably shouldn't post it.

If you don't mind that though, and would like other people to see your work, but are worried about people yanking them and doing things with them online, here's a simple solution: Make a watermark. Sign all of your work that you don't want stolen, and make the signatures obvious. If you can incorporate your signature into the design of the image so that it's impossible to remove, that's always best -- however, if you can't do that, you can always use an image editing program such as Photoshop to place a semi-transparent "watermark" signature over a part of the image.

These methods have always worked for me, and I haven't had any problems with art thieves thus far - and that isn't because I'm a terrible artist not worth stealing from, or something. The artists that have the most trouble with art thieves usually seem to be fanartists of popular anime and manga series, so if that's not you, you shouldn't worry too much about it - just always remember to sign everything you post online!

Hope this helps! :)
Reply:If you are looking to sell the backgrounds, you could try selling them as stock photography. If you do this, they are protected not only by intelectual copywright laws but also by the company's contracts. If you decide not to do this, you still are covered by inelectual copywright laws. However, good luck enforcing them if you post the photos online

Information on Art Internships?

I am a junior in college, and my major is art. I would love to do an art interenship. It doesn't seem like my school has a lot of art internships posted. I know it is good to look around, but does anyone have any suggestions? I am interested in animation, and illustration. Or just art in general. Any tips? I go to school in a small town in New York.... Thanks!

Information on Art Internships?
http://www.awn.com (Animation World Network...this one lists lots of companies looking for workers or interns)

http://forums.cgsociety.org (check in the employment section and see if there are any internship offers)

I can't think of any other specific sites, unfortunately. I'm guessing you don't go to an art school, otherwise your career services dept. would be able to search for internships for you.

Try finding companies you'd like to work at (For animation the big ones are Pixar, Industrial Light and Magic, Dreamworks and Disney; for Illustration you might want to consider interning at smaller video game companies that might have a need for concept artists, background designers, etc) and seeing if their website posts any information for jobs/internships. Many do, and if you start putting together your portfolio now, you can send them out in time for summer when most internships start.

Good luck!
Reply:What kind of art? Research places you would be interested in interning for, then contact them and see if there are any available. Also you could try doing an informational interview to start networking and gain contacts.

Where does art have a place in this world?

I've always been an artist at heard, I look at the world as a big painting, Every since I was young, I draw and I draw till I couldn't anymore but still want to. But they're...under developed? I like Jazz and all kinds of sounds and Music, I love the arts and cooking everything that has something to do with art. But I fail in academics, I'm not balanced. So right now, I'm in a crappy school where there's no arts or anything I like. I guess I deserve it for not trying my best, but I'm trying to make the best out of it cause I only have 2 years to be the best I can for college. So I'm taking remedial classes, and tutor for academics and will this help me with college? And I have no idea how to develop my art talents in such a short time. Cause everyone says "time and practice" but I have very limited time. And with this talent, I have no idea what to do with it in the future. I mean getting a job as an animator/cartoonist will be hard cause it's not on high demand!

Where does art have a place in this world?
There's plenty.

I to see the world as a painting, or imagine taking a photograph of it.

First of all, think about where you can see art and how it is put into practice...

Commercially

Aesthetically

Impressionably

Image

etc

The home-

furniture, grand design-interior and exterior

paintings and photographs within the house

Media

Cover work, photographs and illustrations for articles in newspapers and magazines, director for: documentaries, film work, advertisements and cartoons, costume design, sets/props/ manager, photographer on contract or freelance photographer

Fashion

Fashion design, fashion photography, fashion accesory design, fashion guru, sets designer

Commercial

You could design perfume bottles, campaigns, advertisements, web layouts, brochures, leaflets, posters, set up exhibitions/shop displays

Education

Graphics, art, photography, design technology teacher in a school, college, or university or part time as a club-you could do this alongside having a studio serving various services.

Remember, if you are good and keep in practice, developing your skills as an artist, you can make it in terms of where you want to go. I don't know where abouts you are so I can't comment, but I know there are many good art institutes out there that can help get you where you want to be.

Good luck!

Reply:Of course, we humans need art, the ability to express ourselves.

But do/be art for the sake of art not the sake of being able to make a living at it. If you do, then great. If not you have enriched your own soul.

Reply:Arts place is in our minds, our hearts and our souls. Art is a lifetime pursuit. Work hard on your studies - it is difficult to make a living at art so you need a back up plan. Pursue art, but be sure you pursue something you can make a living at also. Continue working at your art - art is love and happiness and give you satisfaction you will not get in other ways. Good luck.

Reply:why don't you get inspiration for art from this world? there is so many thing to paint when you think of it, trees, sunset, space (moon, stars etc), war, peace, different raced people together, mountains, a person at their daily routine etc. Try to look for ideas and paint/sketch what comes from your heart or you know that will look effective. Just collect little pieces of art you like and join them together. It will look great, just don't worry so much, art comes from the heart as does inspiration.
