I'm interested in becoming an Art Director. Could I do this with a major in marketing/advertising?

I am currently a marketing major with a concentration in advertising and promotion, but I also have artistic skills and I enjoy all aspects of art and creativity. My question is, if my major is advertising and I sprinkle lots of art classes through my schooling to learn about various aspects of art, could this prepare me well for a career as an art director? Or is it better to go to an actual art school? I'm ideally hoping to mix a business background with a heavy dose of art/creative classes in the mix.

look at www.salary.com it provides a wealth of info, and numbers.
Reply:It really is better to go to art school.

Marketing is great, and is something that I believe a lot of art directors need more of. But the fact is, if you want to be a great art director, you raise your odds of success substantially if you have training in the fine arts.

Maybe a double major? Does your university offer a fine arts or graphics design major?

35 yrs exp in adv

I went to Pratt Inst in NY for a BFA in advertising. I did a lot of art projects using design and creative approaches. I interned summers for an ad agency as an assistant. When I graduated, I became the art director's assistant and 3 years later, art director.

I made a good living, then opened my own ad agency.

I would think that you could too. Good luck.

Reply:I have seen enough people who have become art director without even spelling art degree. But you need to have creativity in your work. Better still is to become creative director.
Reply:sure you can
Reply:To be an Art Director in the long run U have to have some good art works done by you.Joining an Art school is a good idea, but more preferable will be to start working with a good Ad agency and exhibit ur skill there to be recognised. As u say u have good art hand, therefore go ahead with joining an ad agency. Don't mind if u have to work it free as a part of learning for some time.Any other query feel free to ask
