GCSE Art/Music?

I am having troubles with my GCSE choices.

I've put:

History

German

French

Art

Music (RESERVE)

However, despite my love of Art, I am not majorly talented and I have heard it is stressful, demanding and time-consuming. I'm a bit worried it will be a lot of work, and I've heard it is nearly impossible to get good grades and I tihnk I might struggle.

I play two instruments and sing, but I have donel ittle theory compared to others and I am not the best at composing. Despite this, I think Music could be an easier option than Art.

Both teachers have said they would be pleased if I did the subject, and I would do well, but I'm not so sure !

Has anyone done the courses? What would you recommend?

GCSE Art/Music?
hey!!!

well I am just finishing my GCSE course and to tell the truth, it is not a piece of cake. i chose drama but my best friend picked art and many of my classmates did too. most of the class is not particullarly talented but even the most talented ones who amaze me are finding it hard to get good grades.

my friend is permanently working on courseworks and her portfolios and gets alot of homework. i guess if art is your passion then it is a good choice but you would have to be prepared to work very hard for little credit.

on the other hand if you have experience in music and are good at it i suggest you pick that because the whole GCSE course is hard enough as it is. make your life easyer and go for music if it is something you like and are good at. you will get to know more about it and you will learn all the things you dont know yet. :))))

ofcourse the choice is up to you and two years are a long time so you should decide what will make you happyer but if you are unsure go for the thing you already know. trust me, i am stressing out because of my exams and I hate myself for picking some of the subjects. it is an important choice which deserves alot of thought.

good luck:))))
Reply:Hey :)

I took art for my gcse, i think that you dont have the great love for art and you enjoy doing it then i dont see no point in you taking it.. sure its time-consuming because you have to draw and paint etc. but if you have a love for art like i do, you will find it very fun and enjoyable :)

The grades are quite easy to get, if you just listen to your teacher and produce good pieces of work.. in gcse art its not really about having talent..as you have to analyse your work (so writing skills) and you do art history on other artists to relate to your work...

If i were you i think it would be wise to take art, as you learn a lot of skills and produce portfolios that will be useful to you in the future :]
Reply:I've had the benefit of studying both Art and Music. I liked both but I'll tell you this... Do what you like more (your PASSION) because you would know that more than anyone else, irregardless of what others say.

By the way... I'm a music teacher / musician today (go figure)
Reply:Yes ... i think you should choose music instead of art.

Art's the subject that you get the most coursework in out of every subject !! However, if you enjoy it and don't do many after school activities ...then i would say go for it. But you have to be very very prepared my friend ... you may get a shock ...

As for music ...i think it's best to pick it. Don't worry about your lack of theory ...not many students tend to take it so there will be very very few in the class. The teacher will definitely love to help. But theory isn't something that takes a long time to pick up ...it's easy and you'll definitely be ok.

Also ...music is so much fun!! You get to go to recording studios and everything!!! I highly recommend it ...

Good luck sweetie =D
Reply:Hi!

I did music- to be honest, it's quite easy. 30% of the mark is performing (if you play two instruments and sing- you'll be fine), 40% is composing and 30% is the listening test. For your composing, your teacher should really help and support you. It was the easiest GCSE i did. On the other hand, most of my friends did art- very stressful! The coursework is so demanding and everything has to be perfect, and at the end, it's a 10 hour exam. If you take it, most of your time will be consumed by it and you won't have much time for other subjects. Unless you want to do it as a career you should hesitate at taking it. Most people regret taking it as it meant less revision for other subjects. On top of that you have to buy all the kit which I believe costs £100. If you're not great at the subject- should you really take it? It's so demanding and yes it's hard to get good grades. But follow your heart!
