I mean i think they should what do you think. Should artists resist creating art that purposefully interprets and responds to other works of art? To what extent does a work of art that interprets another work of art fail if the audience is unaware of the reference?

The artistic interpretation, having been made, is the "art", the doing of it. The comprehension and references are there to be discovered. It's sorta like decorating and hiding Easter eggs. The "art" is in the decorating and presentation (hiding them, in this case). It matters not if or when they are discovered. To desire their discovery and the association with a previous work of art is the desire of a teacher. Yes, art teaches. But, creation and education are separate actions.
