History or Art History?

Which has more employment opportunities, a PhD in art history or a PhD in history (general)? I love history, but have a definite appreciation for art history. I would like to either be a professor in one of the two, or work in a museum, or perhaps another non-traditional route using skills obtained in one of the two.

I would think History might be in more demand, but at the same time there is probably more supply in History than in Art History, right? I would think more people probably major in History than in Art History.

Any enrollment numbers, job demand statistics, etc... would be great. The statistics should be differentiating between the two areas - I've already found stats that list all social science professors in one category - not very helpful.

History or Art History?
Art History is predominantly constructive and social reflection,

Whereas much of general history is destructive and social turmoil.

Therefore, Art History would seem to be more interesting but that depends much upon a person's interest and propensities

Probably more opportunities in general history than art. This is, of course, subjective. Creative thought and experience will open up opportunities in either, so choose that which seems most appealing to you. A PhD in either is admirable in and of itself.

I would choose that which will affiliate you with the kind of people for which you feel a connection. Cannot go wrong. Later you can always migrate to a different avenue, exploring in growth.

Good Luck. . . .
Reply:Neither, they both really suck. Get a Bachelor of Science Degree, some Science courses, and you will do way better and have way more opportunity to make a change in the world, and yourself for the better.
Reply:This is off the top of my head, and I have no stats to substantiate it. But I would imagine you would be much better off in History, as opposed to Art History. Any degree in any area of the Fine Arts, is always at the bottom of the pay scale.

Depending on your area of concertration, you might check-out both the United Nations, and the C.I.A.

If your area of concentration should be in the arenas of either the Middle or Far East, you might be surprised what job offers each may provide.

Good luck to you,
