Is studying art at college a waste of time?
Do what you want with your life..if your passion is art, go into an artistic career. You are living life for you and no one else. I went into a college program that I have no interest in, and realized I enjoy art the most and now I have wasted a year and am changing my program. My parents also said I wouldn't be able to find a career with art but back then I listened to them which was stupid of me...now I wasted time and money. I would rather be doing something I love and make little money than do something that feels like a chore and make tons of money. Some art careers you can have is graphic designer, creative advertising, art teacher, painter...etc.. Just do some research on the net. Good luck and don't make the same mistake I did! :)

Reply:With art, you will probably only be able to get a job as an art teacher. You could possibly teach on a college level if you were willing to get your masters/PhD.
Reply:I'm sorry to your mum, but she is wrong. No matter what you enjoy, with passion like yours you will get a job. Think of how much of the business world relies on art (advertising, marketing, building design). Think of how huge of a business the art world is. Think of how much of the multi billion dollar entertainment industry is focused on art (film, television, print). There are more jobs in art related careers than anything else I can think of. And, in case money is important. If you are good at it, you will get rich. Like Andy Warhol, like Ansel Adams, like Steven Spielberg, and so many more.
Reply:Unless you want to teach art to students in 1st-12th grade or work in an art museum its not going to get you a long-term job or regular pay-check. I took art appreciation as a humanities course but wasn't interested in it as a career. My recommendation is that if you want to try and make money in art do it on the side and study something that you can have a future in if your art sales or talents don't work out especially as you get upwards of 40+
Reply:Is up to your, if Art is your major goal, you should go with it.
Reply:Do you mean creating art yourself, or studying art history and/or current trends?

If you mean yourself, look into Graphic Design. That's a GREAT career that requires artistic talent and isn't hard at all to find work in.

If you mean studying other peoples' art, then you would likely end up teaching it. I'm not too sure about other things you can do with that kind of degree.
Reply:Hello!

I don't believe studying Art is a waste of time. If it is a passion of yours and you TRULY believe in your talent, go after it. Have a secondary plan of income just in case your passion may not pay "your worth," but remember this, it is your life, and you will never know what you can achieve if you don't try...

Reply:Going to college is a biggest opportunity. You should combine your skills and talent, and your passion for something, and if it's ART - nothing should be wasted.
Reply:If you have future plans for living life that would include an art major than it should be fine.
