What is art?

Art, if one thinks about it, is simply a description of a perceived 'something.' However, what calls for that description? Is there honestly no objective definition of 'art' at all? (note: words are not 'art', per se).

In a poem, words are perceived, meanings are gathered, and a general understanding (or misunderstanding) is derived from the literature. However, is that understanding of the art stemming from cultural values endowed during that individual's growth and development?

What is art?
Art is the elegant expression of a thought or feeling, but art need not exist only for its own sake. Art, and its many forms, is a highly subjective concept culturally, temporally, and personally.

Also, a quotation:

The purpose of art is to impart the sensation of things as they are perceived and not as they are known. The technique of art is to make objects ‘unfamiliar’, to make forms difficult, to increase the difficulty and length of perception because the process of perception is an aesthetic end in itself and must be prolonged. Art is a way of experiencing the artfulness of an object; the object is not important." (Viktor Shklovsky, "Art as Technique")
Reply:the creation of beautiful or thought-provoking works, for example, in painting, music, or writing

beautiful or thought-provoking works produced through creative activity

the skill and technique involved in producing visual representations

the ability to achieve things by deceitful or cunning methods

the activities enjoyed for the beauty they create or the way they present ideas, for example, painting, music, and literature

nonscientific and nontechnical subjects

the techniques used by somebody in a particular field, or the use of those techniques
Reply:For me, art is a word that only the artist must create. Is an expression to the world of who you are and how do you see the world. Describes the beauty of the things, even if a person or something is ugly, they create the most beautiful. Whether is through paint, writing, sculpture, etc. An art comes from the heart of the people, not only from the artist because everybody is an artist of their own.
Reply:A work of art is a metaphor for a state of mind. A poem, a painting, a sculpture, a piece of music, is the sensible representation of a state of mind such as an idea or an emotion.
Reply:"Art is a step from what is obvious and well-known toward what is arcane and concealed."
Reply:art i think is an expression (music, sculpting, writing, drawing, painting etc.)
